I picked these today, a mixture of Calypso and National Pickling cucumber.
Pickling cukes
They look beautiful, both before and after pickling!
I've come to like pickling cukes for all uses, as they always seem to be crisp and sweet. I'm trying 'Calypso' hybrid for the first time this year, but I think I have only one survivor (vacation watering issue). I've grown 'National Pickling' before and had them do well.
Mighty nice, Big Red.
(Gotta get that garden harvested before the Blue Hubbard squash takes over, huh?) LOL
Nice Big Red. What is your pickling method?
Thanks gang!
kanita, I used Ball's Kosher Dill pickling mix and followed their directions. I've never used it before so don't know how they'll come out.

I always try to plant one pickling cuke plant. I don't actually pickle, but the cukes mature much earlier than other plants and they make a tasty snack right off the vine!
Red~ When did you start your cucumber plants? I am also a 6a and I am no where near getting any cukes yet to pickle. I have some blooms but that is it. I can't remember when I planted mine. I guess I will have to go back and look on my calender. Your pickles look YUMMY!!
They look delish, Big Red!
I just put up 8 little pints myself, with a family heirloom "short cuke" and a recipe that includes one head of dill, one grape leaf, one garlic clove, three peppercorns, and a clove. Can't wait till they season...
LissyJ,
I set out started plants of National Pickling on May 13th. I planted seeds of Calypso and Straight Eight also on the 13th. I started picking the National Pickling cukes about 5 days before the Calypso. My Straight Eight's are just about ready to pick now, about a week behind the others.
Zeppy,
For a package mix (Ball's Kosher Dill) they are very good. They've only set for a week, aren't quite ready yet, but still very good. That sounds like a Kosher Dill recipe that you have too, care to share it?
