Brugs are drowning!

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

If you walk in my yard it is like walking on a wet sponge. I have brug beds standing in water and these are beds with good drainage! I so hope they don't rot! They all have buds on them too! They are in full sun (LOL) but I don't think they have had full sun but for a day or two since I planted them...

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh wow.. I hope they are okay. It's hard to imagine too wet with temps like we are having! I know you worked so hard for your brugs. Hopefully your buds will open.
The good thing about wet is, it isn't a good environment for spider mites... I know, that's digging deep for something positive! LOL

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Well at least it is something! I did have a bought with them in the greehouse a few months ago! They are all looking good now and around half of the 50 or so that I have left (I gave a lot to my DD's, SIL, and friends...) have buds on them! I have had several bloom and have posted some pics. A few of them have bloomed latley even though the rain has kind of beat up the flowers at times... (did not take pics of those..as a matter of fact it is pretty hard to take pics now. I guess I could see if DH would hold an umbrella over me and the camera!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Crossing my fingers here for you to dry out a little in the coming days. I think Texas should share a little of the rain with the rest of us now. I'm sure you wish you could send it away too.

Tyler, TX(Zone 8a)

In Tyler we are on flood watch now for 1 or 2 in. because the ground can't hold any more. The forecast for all week end is rain. Joan

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Sounds like bad news for brugs, with fungus waiting to start on them.

Send some rain our way, we sure could use it and I need the rest from watering! I know, I know, "watch what you ask for"!!

Union City, CA(Zone 9b)

A few years ago I went around and dug holes about 18 " deep and put in 6 " PVC pipe to pump out water .
I bought a small pump and put in hole and pumped out the excess water .
---Since then I found some caps to cover them . Right now I fill with water , a few drops of supertrive and go to next hole . deep watering and feeding plants .
---I am on / in a track home with crushed rock so the water does reach the plants and also drains / allows excess water to be pumped out .
--- It worked out well enough that my brother rented a post hole digger - but he put pea gravel around pipes instead of dirt .

The official readings for Tyler and Longview are somewhere around 10 inches for the month of June. We live about 30 miles from both and we have had over 22 inches since the 13 of June, when I started taking records. The ground was already saturated at that time. I build docks and have been rained out over 14 times in a month. The hardest thing is when I come home I still can't do anything around the house, so I sit at the pc and eat. The only ones happy here are the ducks. I can't believe I am saying this in July but we need some sun.

Our soil is mostly sandy loam with some patches that are sandier and a few that have a lot of clay. The stock tanks are located in the clay soil. That worked out well as far as our cattle pastures go. The yard around the house has so much sand that last night I was telling my DH that if we didn't get more rain by today, I was going to have to water my fruit trees. Rain to the east of us. Rain to the west of us. Rain north and south of us, but we keep getting rain measured in hundredths and tenths.

I know what you mean yardqueen, I hope they dry out good enough. Seems my brugs inthe ground do better than the ones in the pots. I recently made a very large $ worth of brugmansias from a brugmansia seller and lost one of mine to rot because we've had so much rain here, I haven't had to water the brugs in a month and that isn't good. BEcause it causes diseases and rot on the younger brugmansias. And alot of my expensive ones are younger. I dare not think about the money lost to this little brug I lost. But it could be worse I guess. I should have put it in the greenhouse so I could control the water intake. The rest seem to be doing well, but the smaller ones are having a hard time. Live and learn. We've never had so much rain like this . Not sure what to think about it.

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Mine are all in the ground. The water just doesn't have anywhere to go anymore. I guess I am going to have to use pellet plant food cause I sure cant use the hose sprayer to feed...LOL

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I wish we could import some of that from you, we have had one rain and temps. are unusualy cool for us at this time of year, just took this picture of my indoor-outdoor thermometor, it is 71 outside 75 inside

YOu'd kill for our rain and we'd kill for your temps LOL I'd gladly give you some if I could. Major storm coming again and I've been out bringing all my young brugs into the greenhouse I've had a whole heck of a lot of leaf drop from the excess rain, I fear of loosing more of those expensive brugs. So I've been bringing them into the greenhouse.

*&$#&^&* all this rain..I got few hours of sunshine today..but along came the rain again..no fun..except the ducks are happy....KEN!!! all your fault!!....LOL...

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Missed another day of work today. Another 2&3/4 inches, most in 30 minuets. We have not lost any Brugs yet but I have taken hundreds of cuttings with hopes of paying off some past debts and most are rotting. We have taken so many cuttings from so many different plants and no place to put them. I do live in the wetter part of Texas but 20+ inches in the month of June is crazy and there is no hope drying out in the near future.

Gordon, the peafowl you are speaking of is a Spalding Pied. Pieds are birds with random spots of white and Spaldings are hybrid peafowl from breeding India Blues to Java Greens. I am now producing Pieds that are 15/16 Java so they look like Pied Javas. Call ducks are ducks that started in England as live decoys. The calls are very boisterous and hunters would tie their legs to a rock so they could not fly away but would bring down wild ducks. Using live decoys is outlawed in the US and England now so they are bred as pets and pond ducks. They are very small and come in about 40 colors so that makes them lots of fun. We have traded ducks for plants mote than once.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Well, I don' t really have a right to complain then, I've got a greenhouse to put my brugs in so they won't rot, andwe're not getting l/8th of what oklahoma and texas are getting. I feel for you guys. Hope it stops soon. From what I hear July isn't going to be a lot better.

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Im with Nadine!! !@!*R%% all this rain! I had to chop off 3 plants and try to root them again. Not even to mention all the pots I planted last week. I spent the better part of the day digging out the pots IN THE RAIN!!! Most of the plants had not rooted in to the ground so there was no real damage done to them. All my expensive and hard to replace plants are safe so I guess unless we start floating away we will be ok. By our rain gauge we have had 10 inches of rain since Monday. Boy I really hope its over!!

If your plants are drowning, you can always try some H2O2 in water to add some oxygen to the soil. That is what is happening.. they are not getting enough oxygen. sounds crazy to water plants that are drowning but it can't hurt if you are losing them anyway. Hydrogen Peroxide .. when you see bubbling , the bubbles are oxygen. Just a little in water for the plants.

I can only wish all of you good luck!
It is so unfair that some areas are needing this water!
Best wishes for your cuttings and for the rain to stop!!

Same here. We need rain desperately. I can't keep up with the watering, if I don't get a little help from Mother Nature. Guess whatever situation we seem to be in, it seems worse than the others. I feel so sorry for you people getting flooded out and hope it soon stops and weather returns to "more normal".

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

I don't know about you all in Texas but we got 21/2 inches more today. My seedling bed has had it. They are all wilted. I really hope they bounce back most of them had little buds. :(
The canal behind that shed was swollen up to the foundation earlier today. Its just a tool shed so no damage was done. We are lucky that we drain so fast.
I sure hope you all up north are ok!

We are flooding here in Tyler but so far it is just streets and some mud slides where they are building. Last year at this time are water bill was over $325 this year we have watered twice and that was early spring. We will have rain everyday for the next week.

The plants and weeds love it. this picture was taken 6-11-07 I will take another today and show you how it has grown.

This is the dry creek that runs in the back yard. It just drains off one sq. block. In 23 years this is the most we have ever had.

For the ones in pots , you can try H202 [ 1/2 cup of 3 % H202 [ hydrogen peroxide ] in a gallon of water ] to kill the fungus going on dead roots . For yard , I have no idea what mixture would be .
It can / will / has killed the "good " stuff in pots . [ worms , emzimes and nematodes ]
Good luck

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

OH my, so sorry to hear all the problem with rain. Have been hearing about it on the weather news.. We sure could use some of it. It has rained here 2 times in the past week.. first we have had in about 2 months.

Rain rain, GO AWAY!!!

So you other Texans thought we were finally out of the woods with these last few days of sun like me? I can't believe it!!! A WHOLE WEEK of SOLIDA RAIN predicted for this week!! My Mandevilla will surely lose the rest of it's leaves and the Brugs are still getting hold so I'm sure they're going to loose theirs as well. Will it ever stop?!?!?!?!

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

EFGeorgia1 we are the same as you, my water bill has almost trippled the last month with all the watering I am having to do, all i can say is I am happy to see I saved snowcone and Golden Lady they both have buds.

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Kareoke, my brugs are doing well so far.. we have finally got some good rain.. remember if you need some cuttings back of the ones you sent me, will be glad to send in the fall.
