Hello,
My sister has three tree type hibiscus that have been in he same pots for years.
The trunks are leaning . She wants to repot in a larger pot. Her question is..should she cut off some of the root to reposition straight in the new pot. She will be adding new soil. We bought the new pots and soil yesterday and would like to do this soon.
Thanks Carol
Repotting Hibiscus
If she's putting it in a bigger pot she shouldn't have to cut the roots, just plant the plant so that it's pointing straight up rather than leaning, the rootball will end up sitting a little lower in the pot on one side than the other but you just fill in more soil underneath the part that doesn't sit as low. There's no reason I can think of to cut the roots.
If she plans on repotting in the same pot, and the plant is very rootbound: remove the plant with rootball, clean the pot thoroughly, make a mix of good quality potting soil and some timed release fertilizer (Ozmocote), fill the pot 1/3 with the mix.
Take a sharp carving knife and cut 1/3 of the root ball off. Place the plant back in the same pot.
The plant is ready to form new roots that are accessible to fresh soil and renewed nutrients.
Thanks to both of you. We do have larger pots..so won't cut the roots.
If she wants to just replace the soil next time and use the same pot we will remember the advice
for that situation...and trim the roots at that time.
Very grateful to you both,
Cheers,
Carol
I root prune plumerias and they love it.
If I root prune a Hibi will it drop its foliage and pout?
It's a good Idea to top prune a hibiscus at the same time you root prune.
