Pruning 1/3 > shock?

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I've just taken off a branch from my second-year brug, and it amounts to about a third of the leafy growth of the plant.

She's pouting. Will she regain composure? Bloom? Watering/fertilizing suggestions? And what to do with this great branch... babies?

andycdn,

I am not a Brug expert by any means, but I can't believe that removing 1/3 of a healthy, growing plant would do it any real damage. I would suggest temporarily moving the plant out of full sun (but keep the light bright), water it regularly but don't keep it soggy, and start fertilizing again when you see new growth. You most certainly will have blooms this year if you are agressive with the fertilzing for the rest of the season.

You can root the whole branch for a new Brug, or chop it up and root the several pieces. There are many methods of doing that.

Please make sure to post pictures in the near future, and especially when you have blooms!

Thanks, Erick. She's in a spot that gets morning sun and bright indirect light for the rest of the day, so she's probably OK where she is. I had to remove the branch because it was blocking my PeeGee Hydrangea. The photo shows them together before the brug got so many leaves. It was the lower branch I took off. This is a Rosamond x Rothkirch.

I've read several threads on propagating from stems and I'm going to give it a whirl... I'll try some in water, some 'log' style in ProMix.

Pics to come when she blooms!

andycdn, you are most welcome. It sounds like you have the situation well under control. She will be just fine. Good luck with the propogating!
