Forgive me but I don't remember who from here sent me the seeds. In less than 5 months it has gone from seed to blooms. I am doing the happy dance
Aristolochia Watsonii
Donna, that is amazing! I would love to add this Aristolochia to my collection. Perhaps we could trade seeds/plants at some point in the future? I have lots of different Aristolochia species to work with.
Congratulations! That is very cool.
Erick
sounds good Erick. I have Trilobata, Gibertii from seed, Gigantea, Elegans, Ringens from seed, Peruvian, Brasiliansis, Tomentosa, Fimbriata, and Watsonii from seed. Do you have any different ones??. I had asked to trade seed of the Peruvian of yours when I first saw your post but found a rooted cutting cheap so I got it. I just got seed of what looks like Cymbefera(spelling) in the picture. I would like Grandiflora I haven't replaced yet from losing in Katrina

Donna, I'm sure we can work out a fun trade or two! I will Dmail you tomorrow with more details. Happy 4th!
Erick
you too Erick
beautiful Marie. All of your leaves are the brown color. It looks great.
Are you the person that sent me the seed??? I really want to thank whom ever did. I really love it
very lovely plant. can it be grown as a groundcover? I grow fimbriata as a groundcover and love it.
Is the watsonii a butterfly plant also?
Is the watsonii a green or a brown leaf plant? or are we talking about 2 diff. varieties.?
If it can be grown as a groundcover, I'd be interested in watsonii seeds.

I'm growing mine as a ground cover and it also doesn't get a whole lot of sun so mine is green. Same plant, put it in more sun and it gets color, less sun less color. I'm hoping mine does well and I get more plants so I can have it in some sunny places, too, because I think it's a great groundcover- takes the AZ heat and sun like nobody's bidness :)
Yep that was me Donna. I am so glad they germinated for you. Mine actually reseeded this year
Donna
The seed YOU sent me of A.Fimbriata has produced lots of flowers and seed pods.I love the flowers.
Thanks again
Nancy
What a cutie!!! Definitely a great container plant. I'll have to find some seeds to.
:) Donna
happy to hear that Nancy. I love the Fimbriata too. Makes such a nice hanging basket
I believe I read somewhere that this Aristolochia, A. watsonii, is pollinated by flies that normally feed off the blood of rodents. The flower mimics the appearance of a mouse's ear, complete with blood vessels. The flies are tricked into landing on the flower and taking some pollen with them!
Again, great flower Donna!
Erick
No shortage of flies where I am :o)
no shortage of flies here either especially the biting ones lol. I was feeding the racoons last year when we moved in but we started getting huge blow flies so had to stop
No shortage of pollinators here lol
No shortage of rodents (bushy tail rats) here.
Hi Donna!
What a unique plant! I just ordered Aristolochia Calico Vine seeds. I've never grown any types of these plants before, much less start them from seeds - so I'm very excited to start.
I didn't even know there were several other types. You sound like you have experience with quite a few. Do you have any advice to give a newbie?
Thanks!
hate you ordered the FB, I have a ton I have been sending out just for the postage.
They take up to several months to germinate, the fresher the better. I fill a little pot 1/2 way with potting soil and the rest of the way with seedling mix. Wet well then press in your seeds just barely covering. Keep damp and in a good bit of direct sunlight
OHHHHH!! That is just like me - always late to the party! :)
If you have any others you are sending out for postage please let me know - I would be interested. . . and any free advice!
Thank you!!
yes just send a regular envelope to me with a new one folded up in side with .41 cent postage on it for the return trip. I will send you a good bit of the seed and some of the Aristolochia Fimbriata as well that makes a great hanging basket. I just harvested these last week. I am in the addy exchange
You are the best! I will get this out to you right away!
Thanks again :)
Donna, you have quite a collection of Aristolochia's! Thats wonderful! Do you have many butterflies laying eggs on them or just the Polyames?
Could you spare a couple of seeds for me please? If they are butterfly attractors, I'd love to see them growing in my garden!
I don;t have any new ones other than those I sent you: A. Ringengs, Gibertii and Fimbriata.
Lovely little flower!
cheers,
Joanmary
Yes JoanMary I will be happy to send you some Elegans and Watsonii. The Watsonii pod isn't ready yet but will send as soon as it is, also the elegans. Hoping the Brasiliensis and Gigantea make pods. They both just had a couple of blooms.
I wish I got the Polydamus but only get the Pipevine and they are just coming in. We have very few Butterflies until mid to late summer but they stay almost to winter.
Thanks so much Donna. I picked a ripe seed pod of Brugmansia Cyprus Gardens a couple of days ago if you'd like some of those as an exchange.
Joanmary
no thanks JoanMary. I have 171 brug seed started now lol
