scales on hibiscus
Oh, how sad to have so many with scale. Had you recently brought a new one in that might have spread it to the others? After pruning the worst branches off I would use a summer oil like Ultrafine or Sunspray to smother the scale and you would have to repeat it several times to get them all. The oil should not harm your plants (it is just a vegetable oil) but in your warm climate you should spray in the early evening just to be sure.
Perhaps others might have a chemical recommendation for you.
Evelyn....I hope someone gives a good answer, I'm going through the same problem. Maybe it's the weather here in FLorida (?) that is making them such an easy target? So far I have sprayed mine AND cut the branches that were heavily infestated, back. I didn't want to cut it all at the same time, so thought I would do sections to keep the roots healthy.
Keep us informed as to how yours do!
use "Sunspray" horticultural oil spray. If they are on the stems only, like snow scale(terrible) you can take a small hobby paintbrush and lightly cover the stems with vegetable oil and it will smother them. On the sunspray ALWAYS follow the directions closely.Several applications must be made to eliminate them.Try to keep infested plants seperate from the others.
Kyle :-)
If push comes to shove, I would try Bayer Tree and Shrub, a systemic. It is the only stuff that got rid of killing scale all over my oleanders. They were covered with it and were big trees. Nothing I used did much. 1 tree died from them. All it took was a soil drench with 2 gallons and they were gone. 1 application lasts up to a year too.
Thanks to both of you! I will certainly give both of them a try!
:)
thank you so much. I will try the Bayer tree and shrub. I don't know how this happenrd as none of my others have it. The only thing I can think of is that they somehow got it from my neighbor when she trimmed her bushes and some branches fell into my hybiscus. Off to the store,Evelyn
