Hi Martha, Welcome to the hoya forum!!
I saw that you introduced yourself on the mini greenhouses thread, and was afraid that some might not see your post.
Sounds like you are well on your way to becoming a full fledged hoya addict! Such a wonderful vice - it may be spendy, but I can't think of a healthier addiction. I figure that as long as my mortgage gets paid, my kids are clothed and fed (shoes are optional), then I can't be doing toooo bad! HA!
Cheers,
Sara
Welcome Broadywoman
Hello Sara
Thank you for the welcome. I actually had a couple of Hoyas many years ago before my daughter was born. She's now 30 years old and I want to play with Hoyas again. I'm not sure I have the right zone for my area. I'm not far from the coast (as the crow flies) in Maine. We have had milder winters lately, but sometimes the temp does dip to -15 with the wind chill factor.
Martha
Welcome Martha from another Main-a and yes, you can do hoyas. One that I would truly recommend is Multiflora. I LOVE this one! It blooms and blooms forever. Although not much of a scent, the flowers are fantastic! I also have a Sheperdii that blooms well and a Heuschkeliana that blooms. Both of these smell fantastic (Sheperdii can be a little strong). I grow many other Hoyas also but they are all too young to bloom :)
Welcome to Dave's....you will really LOVE it here :)

Martha, I lived on the coast - both on one of the NJ barrier islands and later in another waterfront house, my back door opened up to the bay. I am an open window person - year round I like fresh air in the house, and I don't believe my hoyas were ever as gorgeous and healthy as they were hanging in those patio doorways, all that mineral-rich sea air blowing on them day in and day out, every season.
In fact, I was alot healthier and happier too. Me and my plants need to get back to the ocean... and soon!!
Welcome!!! Some of the best hoya growers are in Sweden...where we don't have to discuss what weather they deal with....and they (the hoyas) bloom and grow beautifully.
Welcome...hope you enjoy our banter...

Hi, Martha, I'm growing my first year of hoya's too, after having had a beautiful variety of carnosa many years ago, then got mealy bugs (I had no idea how to grow these plants or enough interest to find out - didn't have internet or even home computers then -- OK so I'm dating myself). Anyway, threw that first plant out (to my dismay now) and am starting over now with a nice collection.
I bought a mini greenhouse from lowes to grow some in during the winter with our dry heat in the north. The rest will get a dose of systemic insecticide if needed for wintering indoors. That's my thought right now, learning as I read and grow these beauties. This is a good forum to learn from, but WARNING - only get your favorites - there are sooooo many choices, easy to get more than you want to spend time watering & fertilizing & loving.
botanova.tripod.com in the hoya forum sticky has photo's of the whole plants - it helps me in making final choices (lots of good sites in this sticky) There, that should do it!!!
By the way, My tanna island that was wilted & I cut from the roots, is rooting nicely again.
Welcome, Cindy

Welcome to Dave's hoyas forum Martha. Yes, you can grow hoyas in a northern climate. In the summer they can go outside, provided you don't let them sit in the hot sun. Hanging from a tree that provides dappled sunlight is perfect for them. I don't have that for mine, so they stay inside all year round. Its amazing how hoyas can adapt and thrive at being housebound.
You'll find yourself with an ever-growing collection of hoyas if you stick around here very long! There's lots and lots of enablers here to help you on your way.

Welcome Martha, I am new to to the hoyas forum, too! Most of my plants have came from AholaHoya. Have a sunroom for spring, summer growing but still indoors; winters, they come into the home in sunny windows.

Welcome Martha!
You will be a hoyaholic in no time!!! If you don't want to be a FULL BLOWN hoya addict, stay away from the "blooms" posts....those breathtaking pics will send you over the edge! Enjoy your hoyas :)

Hello everyone!
As you can see, I'm just getting the hang of the Dmail. I've been responding to each and I now realize that I can include everyone. I picked up on the warmth as I read all the correspondence before I bought the subscription. I've been thrilled with the ability to talk to people all over the country and the world. As I replied to Kim and Sara, I work still work part time. I have my plant collection in my laundry room under fluorescent (spelling) lights. I had a collection on African violets years ago before my daughter was born. We had a friend that was a grower. Sorry to run on. I am anxious to talk to everyone but we are in the process of clearing property to hopefully move to my hometown of Phippsburg, Maine (only 9 miles away) so will be away until later on in the day. Thanks again for the friendly response. Martha
