Hi Gordon,
I'm a newbie gardener, no expert. But I can tell you my experience with these from this year.
I bought six of these peruvian daffodil bulbs. They were BIG and looked very nice.
Only ONE of them did bloom. The others have really pretty green strappy leaves. The one that bloomed did it VERY early in the spring, I think it was April?
Mine look healthy otherwise, and are in full sun. I guess they just need a year to get situated? I'm hoping to see more results next year.

I have about 6 in my garden that have been there at least a couple of years. The blooms lasted well over a week.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

laura..OH..I'm really worried I'll not get blooms this year now... if in TX you didn't....and the greens here are so well developed.. and no flowers yet.. but maybe... I'll have to dig mine for the winter..so I doubt they will ever be established enough.. big enough ... maybe..
Dun 1... thanks..well a week would be lovely ..
do you two grow the white one.. or the yellow one... I got the white one here..not being real keen on yellows.. I keep thinking they are a yellow leaf Ineed to pull off ] aside from a rose or two with the coral color a bit yellow.. Gordon

Gordon,
Your foliage is much better looking than mine, which is yellowed pretty badly now. We've had nonstop rain and flooding for the past 2 months. In fact, it is pouring down right now, and at least 2 more weeks of daily heavy rain in the forecast.
MIne are all white. I don't care for the yellow ones either.
I should probably dig and store mine now since they have gotten all the sun exposure they would have needed after blooming, plus the fact that they are headed for a daily drowning. AND since I plan on relocating them for next spring.
Pretty picture....what is the dark purple verbena type flower? (not the petunia).

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

OH Laura.. Thanks.. but your foliage is further along than mine is... I'll keep treating mine like it will flower anyday..and hope it does..
the putple flower is a heilotrope.. "Fragrant Delight " and is quite fragrant..as are the purple petunia.. This is my first year in 30 for petunias.. as they were on the do not grow another one list but I could no longer pass on such a cooperative plant... Gordon

Gordon-
I dig mine up every year and then replant in May.
Seems like the bulbs have to be about 6" in diameter before they will bloom. By then they have 2-3 bulblets as well. [I don't usually break off the bulblets.]
I planted mine in mid May and theystarting blooming in mid June and have been blooming for the last two weeks.

ROX..m 6"indiameter.. didn't figure them geting so big..mine came about like a good sized hyachenth... I've got a ways to go now... thanks for the reality check...ya'll.. got no idea as to what was going on with them... got a better idea now.. not only am I a novice... but one useing infant bulbs... I should have dug some at the resort... Thanks... Gordon
I'll just enjoy the ones that are working this year... Japaneese Picotee blue.. MG

I got two bulbs in a coop this spring. Both bloomed and the bulbs were abt 2" in diameter. Each send up one flower stalk with 4 blooms. I really enjoyed them. My question is: do they need to be dug before or after the first frost?

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Hi Kooger... when did yours go in the ground.. and when did they bloom..
I've always heard the expression Killing Frost.. sometime after just cool and perhaps frosty on the grass or pumpkins in the morning.. is the trigger for me for most things.. energy in the leaves has decended into the bulb.. tropicals I try to have in by then... but in hopes of keeping them up and running through the winter .. with out an autum set back.. are there bulbs to be removed before they get knocked down by the cool.. it hadn't occoured to be to ask about this ... Good Question
I'm still somewhat hopeful there will be a flower spike for me this year.. Gordon

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

I really don't remember exactly, but I think I planted them the end of April or early May - one already had a leaf growing abt 3" long by then. That one bloomed by the end of May and the second one by the first week of June. The blooms didn't last very long, but were very pretty. I think I got one pic, that's abt all.

Athens, OH

My bad....I meant 6" circumference not diameter. Oops! Which translates to about 2" diameter. Sorry!

I pull mine up before the first frost because our first frost is sometimes a doozy...like 25F.

I'm a bit confused. What do I have? I thought it was a peruvian daf, but it looks different from Gordon's... Whatever they are, they haven't bloomed or budded, yet. I'm hopeful... planted them LATE last year and they bloomed with in a few weeks. Dug in fall and replanted earlier this year... I liked them because the bloom lasts at least 3 -5 days..and nice foliage, too!

This is just my opinion but the pic in the first post looks like a Hymenocallis species to me while AuntB's looks like a Pancratium species to me.

As to which Hymenocallis species you have Gordon--that would definitely not be one of the aquatic species since you say you can dig and store over the winter. I suspect its one of the beautiful Mexican species. I have about 9 species of Hymenocallis but all but 4 are just in their first year seedling stage so definitely not useful for your ID. The four I have that are of blooming size are all aquatic except for H galvestonensis and its dormant now. Equally useless to help you ID.

All are hard to distinguish from a photo alone (for me any way). I have two species of Pancratim but they are both at seedling stage.

Pancratim link which might help you ID yours:

Hymenocallis link--good luck there, I think they are one of the most difficult of species to ID:

Thank You, dmj. (Oh, my, now you've tweeked my interest-could be yet another plant passion). Thanks for the link, too!

I got 3 bulbs from the co-op. I planted them in the middle of a pot of coleus. Here is a picture of them blooming on June 6. They bloomed a long time. I was really pleased with them.

Now I need to be sure I manage to keep them over the winter.

Oh Susan..pretty! The foliage is taller this year, but still no sign of a bud.. Should I have thrown in some bone meal? I let the tops die back some last fall by not watering and dug before frost, they looked fine when I planted them this spring..... maybe I need to be more patient..... I should be seeing a stalk...

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Mine are not blooming yet, it seems that they are late July for me....

Plant Files lists 5 of these but only two have photo's

Here's the link to the first one: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/1234/

Maybe one of these is your plant.

I bought a couple of these a few years ago and promptly forgot where I had planted them. I found out later when I dug into a bulb:LOL: I've got three now and they are huge, the leaves are about 2 1/2-3 ft tall and the flower stalks were 4-41/2 ft tall. They are taking up quite a bit of space so I may have to relocate them. They did take a couple of years to situate themselves before they made it to blooming size, my spade attack notwithstanding;)

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Okay, Gordon and dmac, you are both in zone 7 so you have yours in the ground, right? You don't dig up in the Fall. Gordon, are yours in a pot? Maybe I could have mine in a pot and just move to frost free area (basement) for winter and bring out when spring temps allow... I don't think they will bloom this year. The leaves are really long, but no bud stalks in site.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

well mine are in a 12" x 12" x 22 Ft. planter.. I get to dig all bulbs there... still long healthy greens... and I've still got bloom hopes... HA HA HA ... Gordon

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

I live in a townhome type apartment and they are in the front flowerbed. The building is brick and in full sun most of the day, so I think some of the residual heat in that area is helpful. I leave mine in the ground. I can't afford to have fussy plants that I have to dig and store. Not enough storage space:LOL:
I do let a nice collection of leaves top it off all winter and if we have late spring cold snaps I try to toss a sheet over the bed in case anything has made an early appearance. So far so good:)

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Bloom hopes..... each day mine are a little fainter... Gordon, go ahead, have your bloom dreams (sniff, sniff),.. bout the time the blustery gusts of Autumn are blowing dirt in your eyes (up there on the roof top digging your bloomless P.Daf bulbs from your 22FOOT planter) reality will hit you... AuntB was right........ lol
It will be August soon, I'm in Kansas, the ground is almost too hot to walk barefoot on. It's been warm/hot for weeks now. Can't be the temps.... I planted a little later than last year, did I miss the "bloom window"? Do they bloom every other year? I'll dig this fall and try again next year, then if there are no blooms, I'll try to trade for something a little more rewarding. Gordon, perhaps you'd like more strappy foliage in that monster planter of yours? I just love your roof top garden, what a lush oasis smack dab in the city! Dmac, the older I get the more low-to-no maintenance plants I look for. I do have a basement to winterize my tropicals and tender perennials but, I have to get someone to lug them in and out for me.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

I totally know what you mean:LOL: I think you may have missed the bloom time for your Peruvian Daffs. Mine bloomed during the first couple of weeks of June. It did take a couple of years for them to get established. To be honest, I forgot what they were and kept bumping into the bulbs when I was trying to plant other bulbs. I just let them stay put for a couple of years, throwing up their leaves and dying down each season:) Had one big plant and blooms last June with two younger plants. This year the oldest plant was still largest and had the most blooms and the smaller two put out some flowers too. I think I'm going to move them a to the very back of the bed since they tend to dwarf everything else and I can't get behind them to plant anything:LOL:

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi, y'all! Here's mine today...First http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa92/tggfisk/IMG_1166.jpg
Very exciting...BTW...I don't dig the bulbs to overwinter. They've been in for a few years and seem to be fine on their own.

This is the last bloom of my Peruvian Lily

I grew Peruvian daffodil (hymenocallis festalis) for about five years. It bloomed when the mother bulb reached about 4" in diameter. I had hoped for more, and was disappointed.

1. The bulb took several years to reach blooming size, and needed lots of space and care to develop. It took several years to reach blooming size.
2. The bloom lasted less than a week, and was minimally fragrant (my main, misguided, reason for growing it).
3. The mother produced huge numbers of offsets, which at first made me want to grow them all individually, but on reflection I realized this was a waste of energy and space.
4. The foliage (like an amaryllis) is useful here and there, but too much is too much. The stem grew about 3' high.

I finally chucked it out. For a week of bloom, interesting though it is, this plant is not worth it for me. I don't grow it any more.

Gordon, you have such a great space. If you really want to try this, I would advise growing it in a pot in an isolated area if you have one, until it reaches blooming size, then sinking it into a show spot when it blooms, if it ever does.

Here's a photo of mine at its best.
