Brand New in El Paso, TX

El Paso, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi everyone! My name is Melissa and I'm a complete novice living out here in hot and dry El Paso, TX. For those who shudder, let me just say that the desert has its own charms, although I've realized that my secret dream of an untamed country garden may not come true while we're still here. My fiance and I just bought our first home and I've had a chance to discover my susceptibility to the bite of the "garden bug". I'd never done any gardening before moving into this house, so everything is new to me. I've been having a great time with indoor and outdoor container plants and will soon be starting on the yard. We've decided we want to do everything ourselves, so I've been waiting while Pete has been grading the yard and building my -oops, I mean our- ;) raised beds. My mom told me about this site and I was hooked as soon as I started looking around. It seems like the community as a whole is extremely friendly, plus all of the advice is a godsend for a new gardener. The Garden Watchdog has already saved me a couple of times from nurseries that looked great until I read the reviews. I wanted to introduce myself and express the hope that everyone will forgive me in advance for any unintentionally ignorant or silly questions I may post in the future. I hope to get a chance to meet you all on different forums. Thanks for the welcome and have a great day!

Las Cruces, NM(Zone 8a)

Hi Melissa,
I'm just a bit west of you, so I'm sure we share a lot of the same native plants. I agree that the desert has its own beauty! And I also agree with hope43, no silly questions here. This is a great place to learn and ask questions.

I don't know about you, but my yard (and my brain) are ready for the relief of a few monsoon rains. Sun is good, but too many days over 100° make me a bit grumpy! :-)

Sheri - I'm on the west side of the mountains, so we keep getting teased with rain that doesn't quite make it over from the east side. So I too am very ready for a few monsoon rains. I lived in Las Cruces for a while. It's great to meet you and thanks again for the welcome.

Welcome to Dave's Garden, Drinnian! Have you stumbled into the Texas Gardening Forum yet? http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/region_tx/all/ There are lots of friendly folks in there.

There is also a Southwest Gardening Forum. They're a little silly in there, but we like them anyway. ;-) http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/region_sw/all/

Thanks so much for the welcome! Betty, I can say that I know I'll be meeting some amazing people here. Everyone I've spoken with has been so friendly and helpful. I just can't wait until I know enough about gardening to add my own advice (instead of a zillion questions) to the posts. :o) Terry seems great and everything I've read about Dave makes me feel confident about the community he founded. Also, the garden watchdog has already been a lifesaver. Umm... the only thing I worry about is my journal. I'm hoping nobody actually looks at it until I figure a few more things out. lol Have a great evening and happy gardening!
