I am trying to plant some flower seeds into some containers just to give a different look to my garden. I love the lush look some of the ones in the Container Forum. So - any ideas? I just got one of those hanging planters that have the holes in the sides for a really lush look, but I need to get my seeds going before I can plant anything in it.

Cinder blocks make good containers....I used them once for herbs in my garden! I am growing a tomato out of the bottom of a 3 gal. pot hanging from a tree....

Oh excuse me, I need to wipe my eyes.....Ya know Carol, I was looking into the hypertufa because of two planters by our hobby shop that look like cement, but they are completely covered by tiny rounded rocks....really pretty, and no one knows where they came from. But we just don't have the cement readily available out here, and shipping that stuff is costly - so heavy! But I'm not done researching yet.
The impatiens sound like a good idea.....What else does well in container combos out here?
NAME it, Shari. Trust me....I will send you a box of stuff to grow in containers... You can use 3 and 5 gallon plastic pots, and plant them with things like Coral Vine, Gardenia repens or one of the prostate ones (is that the right word????)...meaning, one of the low growing ones and they will grow low and cover the pot. I have a new Senecio and if you let me grow it out I will send you a cutting (rooted of course)...bright orange and yellow floers. With a trellis you could grow Passiflora, bougainvilla, ....you name it!!!!
Let me know if you want a box of 'stuff'. How about a variegated Solandra?

Oh, a good plant for containers is cannas. Put it in the middle and put lower growing plants all around it.
I have so many cannas - I gave daughter a huge (5ft) one...beautiful orange blossoms. I'm thinking more of the "bucket o'blooms" type thing... I have so many plants that are green...pothos, bird's nest fern, gingers, herbs, etc...well mostly green - flowers occasionally....looking for something different out here. Know what I mean?
I will root you some variegated Solandra...only blooms once a year...but the rest of the time is SOOOoooo colorful.
Do you have Crinums there...like the dark burgundy leafed Queen Emma??
How do you receive mail? Does it have to go FPO??? Hey...if I want to visit...how does one get there? Do you grow Heliconias? Gingers? Costus? Jasmines? I think what you need to grow is alot of variegated stuff....I have a Pereskia aculeata that looks better than a variegated bougainvilla, doesn't mind salt and has HUGE thorns...grow it on a fence...live the colors!!!! How long does mail take to get there from HI?

That would be loads of fun!! Just make sure to knock me out before putting me on a plane. LOL. I don't fly though I love to go to air shows and every time I hear a jet or helicopter I run and see what it is and how low it's flying so I can wave.
