A chicken miracle!

Woodsville, NH

I waited a few hours to make sure he made it (so far anyways). I was moving some more wood I bought for another roost into the pen. The chickens were checking it out when I must have spooked them and after they scattered from under the long pieces I kinda laid length wise, a white silkie lay dead. He wasn't breathing, I listened for any sound nothing, so I gave him mouth to beak, his crop really inflated so I press my palm against it and did it over and over again. I listened, he had a heart beat with a few more breaths he started breathing on his own. I sat down with him and kinda bounced him to get him moving. He couldn't move at first then would and walked and then crouched down like a setting hen, after a few minutes he got up and walked around with the other. He (I think anyways) must have hit his head. I read silkies have killed themselves by banging their heads in carrier. Only time will tell if he will be fine in the long term, for now he if alive and breathing! Oh and eating!

Well if he's moving around and eating he will probably do alright, atleast they are good signs !!!

Good luck!!!

Wow, Lora. You know how to do chicken CPR! Okay, I'll stop teasing but this is pretty incredible. That's one lucky chicken to have such a good chicken mama.

That is amazing! Way to go LoraK!

Okay, this is a tragic/ meaningful story, but I really did just snort OJ out of my nose laughing and picturing you doing chicken CPR.

BRavo Lora! I'm so delighted for you! What quick thinking!

How's the whole gang doing? Any ideas which of the little ones are roos and hens yet?

Woodsville, NH

Snorting OJ again are ya? LOL OJ is my younger dog, Wilsons nickname, only one of his "jewels" have dropped so OJ (one jewel) is his nickname and he snorts too!
Hey you gotta try. I was horrified and then remembered my CPR! I would have done the same for anyone, well, nothing wild.
Now sexing silkies, does it mean anything if the part where their comb is coming will be is bigger and wider than others? I know my silver sebrights the male comb was triple the width of the hens (ended up with 3 females and one cock from the ones I hatched) and the turkeys were easy, the three boys do the adult male things and are larger than the other three (3 male and 3 female!) even at 1 month old. My marans were right on from Ideal, 6 female one male. I have 5 regular pearl guineas left (sold some), 15 silkies and 11 more colored guineas in the brooder (well its the chick wrangler with a heat lamp) that I still haven't figured out what they are.
I am going to Keene on tuesday, I am picking up a yellow crown amazon and some lovebirds and cockatiels to handfeed. If you are around maybe my husband and I can drop by????

Whoa ! These pages never quit amazing me! Good work Lora!
Just a quick note, My DH lived in Keene for 12 years! late 70's through the 80's! You never know who you'll meet here! You two (BYH and you) may have met my ole man when you were babies!LOL!!!

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

LOL, chicken cpr works, I'll try and remember that. My silkie roosters do have a wider comb, and they are cranberry in color. Silkies are hard to sex, I'm hoping some of my baby chicks are hens and not roosters, I don't need any more silkie roosters.
