caribbean seedling

Tucson, AZ

wow! i just looked at my notes. it's been a long time coming. i germinated this seedling back in 2004. almost 3 yrs! well, it was worth the wait.

the fragance is gardenia and strong. petals are tough.

did any of you get some of the caribbean seeds from walter years back? if so, how are your seedlings. from what i understand there has been no noticeable variation in the seedlings and they look exactly like the seed parent. i'm sure there are genetic differences.

enjoy! - dete

Very nice pic, Dete! I still have two seedlings from the seeds you sent me over a year ago, but they are still very tiny plants. I wonder if that is P. x alba. I have that one from Kukiat, and I think the leaves are similar, but it hasn't flowered yet. I just love the species. I have a P. bahamiensis that will bloom soon, and my P. stenophylla and P. stenopetala both have inflo's. Lucky you!

thanks clare! it will be interesting to find out what this one is. it's probably from a species plumeria. i only say that because of the lack of noticeable variation in the seedlings.

Yes, I think it is a species too.

I got several seeds from him, though I ended up keeping only one plant. it is Plumeria alba 'Anegada', as Walter called it. Mine is almost 5 feet tall now but still no blooms. It tends to be a magnet for rust mites, as is P.sericifoila, Abigail, and a few others I have here, which means they must be sprayed with Avid every few weeks to avoid the discolored and mishapen leaves that fall off eventually and make the plant ugly. Before I discovered the cure (Avid), this was aproblem for this plant last year and I think that set it back and that's why it isn't blooming yet. It looks like a lollipop shape where all the new growth at the top portion is replacing the damage from last year on all kids of crazy, little side branches where it kept trying to grow and kept getting eaten back. Anyway, thank God for Avid. These rust mites are horrid little beasts here in Florida. Makes the leaves really ugly and can stunt the plant and blooming cycle. Well, at least the majority of plumies I have aren't seriously affected by it.
