Chimeras

Madison, WI(Zone 4b)

I haven't been online much lately because of a balance disorder. Since everyone is so interested in chimeras I thought I would post a few pictures. Yukako has allowed me to buy many other plants. I have sold young blooming ones on e-Bay for anywhere from $40 - $127. My mother Yukako and the babies like to grow at the end of the lights. I am attaching a picture of the mother plant. I just topped it to get more babies.

This one is a sport of Emerald City. Emerald City is white and green. Almost all of my EC's are mutating to this one which is not a chimera.

I wish I had a picture of my Debon's Rosey Posey. It is pink with a red stripe and has variegated leaves. I just topped the momma plant. You'll have to find a picture in First Class or at the AVSA site.
I probably have 15 - 18 more chimeras, but none of them are blooming right now. They are growing for our fall club sale.

Nancy they are all beautiful!

I have a question... when you top a chimera to make more babies...can or how will it ever return to a single crowned plant?? Or do you ever want it to??

Thanks,
MsC

The top get planted as a new baby. I usually leave 2 - 3 rows of leaves when planting it. It goes into a covered container for a couple of weeks until new roots grow. Think of it as taking care of a plant with a long neck. And you still have the original plant (the top) which will bloom true.
The bottom part of the plant will throw up a lot of suckers. Sometimes I have to break off a leaf or two to give the babies more room. Sometimes when I have taken off the first set of suckers, I will give that stem a fresh cut and take off a couple of more leaves. Lo and behold, in a couple of weeks, more suckers start to appear. It has to be a goodsized plant to start with to do this.
Did i confuse you or did this help?

Nancy, that was helpful...but when you are done with making babies...how do you get it to go back to a single crown plant, or will it ever?

Madison, WI(Zone 4b)

The bottom will never go back to a single crown plant. After having all those babies, it is pretty tired and usually dies off. But you still have the top which is the original plant.

Thank you for the information on chimera's . I always wondered what happened to the mother plant afterwards...I admire them ~but from a very far distance...lol
They are fascinating plants, aren't they!
