Awful Morning - My dogs killed a cat - What to do?

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

I feel so sick.

7:30 AM Dogs let out for morning relief.
7:45 Doc barking like he caught something. The Jack Russells are attacking cat on grass. Our Siberian Husky is circling. The dogs are in a frenzied state and I can't control them. Pull Jake off, begin to scream at both of them. Jake gets loose, I continue to scream at the dogs to get off of the cat. Dogs are going for cat's face and neck. I started screaming for help. I get Jake off again. I finally get Doc. Doc gets loose, I get him off a second time. I can barely hold on to Jake & Doc. Andy get's up comes outside and tells me to stop screaming. Blue moves in on cat. I yell at Andy to come and get Blue. I can barely hold the dogs. Andy hesitates, I continue to scream to Andy to get Blue. Andy can't see well, he does not have his contacts in. No shoes on. He runs to get his shoes and can finally get to Blue. Blue is pulling the cats tail and leg. Andy grabs blue and blue grabs the cat and tosses the cat. Andy has to sock Blue in the head to get him to let go. I can see it is very injured. Looks like rear right leg is broken. The cat grabs my pj' pants with it's claw. Look of terror. Andy get's blue in the kennel. He comes back for Doc. I take Jake to kennel. Cat motionless on grass, but still alive. I run to get clothes on and car keys, Andy runs to the phone. He Calls our Vet. Get emergency number of place in 9 miles away! I try local Animal control. Answering Machine. I try next county Animal Control, can't get anyone.
7:45 - 8:00 Back outside - cat has moved. I know it could not have gotten far. I tell Andy to look for cat and I will go back inside and call Animal Control again. Can't get anyone. Call 911. 911 operator says she will contact our local Animal control. I call local Animal control again and leave message on voice mail. Back outside. Andy has found the cat and we can hear cat moan in the flower border. Lots of weeds and we can't see it. Andy and I start pulling out the plants, the cat has crawled underneath a small overhang. It is looking at me, eyes are closing and opening. I can see it is critical. I am afraid to touch it. As I reach in, the Cat takes a swipe at me. I don't blame the poor cat. My mind was racing on how can I get this animal out and get it to the vet. It might have disease and try to attack me. I run to the greenhouse and get leather gloves. By the time I get back the cat is motionless, I can tell by the eyes it is dead. Andy gently probes with stick. Motionless.

8:30. Local animal control arrives. He retrieves the Cat, and confirms it has died. Officer says cat has a broken back. He goes over the Cat very carefully and gently. Feels all the bones. Looks inside cats mouth. No collar, no pet chip. I can see injuries on it's belly. I start to cry and lose control, what if the Cat is someones pet? There are at least 5 known pet cats on our block alone. All are dark color. This one is black. He tells me that we are not liable (even if the cat belongs to someone) because cat entered fenced yard and dogs territory. Told to watch dogs closely because they will be on the hunt excessively from now on (especially the next week). Asked what kind of dogs. Two Jack Russell Terriers and Siberian Husky Mix. Tells me that Huskies also hunt small animals and are known for it. Officer was very professional and friendly. He felt bad too, it seemed.

It was a very sad and traumatizing experience for me. Andy was amazingly calm. Thank God he was home. I can't believe that not one of the neighbors came to help me. I was screaming so very loud for help. I didn't know I could scream that loud. I saw one neighbor to the rear standing at their back door. But I know they do not like dogs, so maybe they were scared. Dave (my husband) on phone says people have probably left for work already, he doubts anyone nearby was home. I know another neighbor was home, but he works nights and probably slept through the whole thing. I don't place blame on my neighbors. No hard feelings. Everything happened so fast. I'm just very frustrated right now.

My head is pounding still. It's 11:45. The dogs are still in their kennels. Doc has scratches on his face and front leg. He is due for his Rabies shot this afternoon - strangely enough. I know the dogs don't understand and the Animal Control officer reminded me that this is what these breeds do. I know this. But it is hard to face them now.

The Animal Control officer thinks this cat was a stray. But how can I be sure. I can't just sit here and do nothing. What if it was someones pet? I can walk door to door on our block. I can post fliers. What if I find the owner. How can I be sure it was this cat's owner. Will they become very angry at me? It is a very real possibility. But still, I feel a responsibility to get the word out somehow.
