I'm a "limited" clematis adict. I have a 26 x 5 foot balcony 6 floors up, and I've got four clematises! I can't seem to stop buying them. They're crowding out room for much else (not really!).
Here's my first bloom of the season, a Rosemoor. This is a new one planted this spring. Lots of buds, and a vigorous vine. I love it!
I finally have something to post!
It's gorgeous! That color is so rich and deep. Is this picture an accurate reflection of the color? I love it!
It sure is. It's one of the deepest colors I've ever seen.
Wow! Another one to go on my "gotta have" list. Sigh.
yeaaaaaaaa..Congrats!!....Jeanne
What a yummy colour "Versailles" is..dark rich burple!!...Are you treating it as a 3 or 2??...Jeanne
Aagh! Revclaus, you are killing me here! Just when I think I've got all the cool ones on my list, you keep giving me more!
I love that dark rich purple. Gorgeous!
Beautiful! I'm very impressed that you are growing so many Clematis on your balcony, especially "Jackmanii" and "Jackmanii superba". They get really BIG! What size container are you growing them in and how big is the trellis they are growing on?
Rosemoor is stunning...such a rich velvety color. May I ask where you ordered it? Gotta have one... asap.
I'm with the rest of you ... that Rosemoor is a must have!
Jeanne, both the Versailles and the Rosemoor bloom on old and new wood, so just a light pruning of dead stuff in the spring. Rosemoor is new this year, but with Versailles we had a killing freeze after it had started to leaf out and grow well, so I had to trim it way back, thus only one bloom. Now that I've cut off the seedhead it's beginning to sprout new leaves. Hopefully by the end of July it'll be a little fuller.
Shirley, the superba is in a 16" foam container which protects the roots pretty well, although I had the same problem with it as with the Versailles. It was growing well when the freeze hit. I didn't know whether it was going to come back or not. But early this week three shoots poked their way through the mulch and are actively growing now. This is only its second summer. Last year I made the mistake of planting morning glory seeds with it, and they took over, although superba did pretty well. This year only one volunteer MG, and the only reason I'm letting that grow is to show it on the morning glory forum.
The regular jackmanii is in its 6th year. It's in an old pickle crock. It had wilt one year, but came back from that. Then a couple of years ago when I was sick and let the thing dry out too much, it came back the next year, but greatly diminished. I babied it shamelessly last year, and this year it's doing very well.
Trellises are the usual 6'. The jackmanii just falls over and heads for the door, or doubles down, making it nice and full. They all do pretty well for containers! They get a lot of wind up here, but it doesn't seem to bother them. And all but the superba don't get a lot of sun. The superba gets early morning sun for a couple of hours and late afternoon sun from about 4 on.
P.S. I got the Rosemoor from Garden Crossings in a 5 1/2" pot.
Love your Rosemoor and am delighted to hear how well clematis do in large pots. I have a jackmani superba that just started blooming yesterday. The flowers are nice but small and not as bright as some I have seen in the nursery. Do I need to do something to it or is it just a matter of waiting for it to mature? I planted it last year ( also from Garden Crossings) and it has grown, but not what I would call rapidly.
Just had to have it....I ordered Rosemoor from Garden Crossings. It will be shipped in the fall. And of course you can't just order one Clematis, so am also getting Bonanza and Regency. Does anyone grow these other two?
I finally got my first flower, on my first clematis vine, and am so happy! Then I looked at the tag and it says "late season bloomer." No WONDER it's taken so long! I'll know next year not to get so antsy.
Mine's the same color... a deep violet purple. Very pretty.
heyitsmejudy, is yours a Rosemoor too? Isn't it exciting to have your first flower? Do you have a photo?
Rosethyme, I just looked at Regency and Bonanza, both gorgeous. Wish I had more room.
Paja, I was hoping to see my superba bloom this year, but the wind took the vines and just snapped them like they were toothpicks. I've never seen such wind here. It's just beginning to vine again. Don't know that I'll have any flowers till next year, if then.
I'll have to look, rev...
No pic right now, I just came across this post but I'll look at the tag tonight and let you know what kind.
I have one other vine that hasn't bloomed yet... it's supposed to get a white flower, can't remember the specific kind of it either but I'll look and post tomorrow and maybe someone can tell me whether it's missed it's bloom time already.
Revclaus, yes, I know what you mean....but we always seem to find room. However, have to admit to having a pot ghetto. Mostly roses though and not Clematis...yet, lol.
it says "late season bloomer." No WONDER it's taken so long! I'll know next year not to get so antsy.
A "late season bloomer" falls into the group of Clematis that blooms in late Summer and early Fall. It needs a 'hard pruning' each year. That is about 18" above ground level. Hard pruning will encourage more stems to grow which will ultimately give you more flowers.
I know it's hard not to get so antsy, but you can help alleviate that by adding some Spring blooming ones (Group 1) and some early Summer varieties (Group 2). However, you are very smart for starting off your Clematis addiction by growing the late bloomers (Group 3) first. The viticellas are very hardy and are resistant to Clematis Wilt, a fungal disease that plagues many Group 2 varieties.
I look forward to seeing your beautiful purple Clematis in bloom.
I looked for this one in the plant files and couldn't find it. I looked under Rosemoor and Rosemore as the cultivar. I'm new at all this so I probably just didn't' search right. anyway -- after seeing this thread, I ordered one! FYI I got it at Garden Crossings.

I didn't find it in plant files either, but I did find it in a google search. The plant is definitely for real, so this gives you the opportunity to enter a new plant in plant files. And you can enter your picture as well. This gives you a chance to really be a part of the community. You can get almost all the details you need from Clematis on the Web:
http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk
Rosemoor is specifically listed at:
http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=2955
Anyone can add a plant to Plant Files.
