Heliconia Farinosa; help is needed.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Ginger has posted an impressive Heliconia Farinosa stalk at the beginning of our Forum. So when I saw they were on sale locally, I couldn't resist. But now what am I going to do with it? Other than treat it like a houseplant in winter in our zone. I was wondering if I could have this under partial sun of the day, or they needed to be understory planting? Will they tolerate a few hours of sun/day? I've a shady area that I grow Hosta but does get some sun during the hi-noon of summer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It should be fine....we have heliconias in full and in partial sun. No worries. I hope.

Carol, many many thanks. Now I can sink the pot into the partial shaded garden. Comes Fall I can just lift it and bring it indoors.

Lily; Best of luck with your haliconias, I will tell you though that I done the pot indoors and out for a few yrs. now in B.R. LA and the best part is that mine start to bloom in July early August but when they come inside when temps first start to dip in to the 50's at night they seem to really take off with the blooms. So find a good spot indoors where you can enjoy it throughout Nov-Dec. I also mist mine with water as often as twice a day once indoors.
Also in the spring when you put them back out, I've tried to divide & repot them with little success. They seem to like to be root bound. I have mine outdoors in light shade.

Lance;
Thank you, for the tips. I really have enjoyed this plant so far. Thus far, they haven't made any more flower stalks (I'll wait until Autumn like you've mentioned) ,new growths are being sent out left and right.
Lance, when do you fertilize these babies? They're looking healthy, thus I haven't attempted to "feed" them yet.

I started off with one in the shade and now its multiplying and there is about 3 or 4 . Neighbors plants shaded them but not any more as he cut them down so will see how they do in the sun. Fran
