This is a Bahama Bay series hibiscus from Barry Schlueter. Called "Going steady". Huge flowers that are semi double most of the time. 9 + inch flowers are the norm so far. heres the plant next to a one gallon milk jug for size comparison.the plant is in a 3 gallon pot.
This is huge....
Amazing bloom! and Ive never seen a bush so dark green.
Most of my plants are that green this year, I have been feeding more often than usual this year.
:-)
Nice bloom, definately large. If you don't mind me asking, what do you feed them to keep them so green?
Wow, that is impressive! Where's Kell? I know she'll love this one!
I have been using a general purpose water soluable fertilizer from Walmart. Similar to Peters or Shultzes. 20-20-20 I do believe. I also keep the plants in part day shade too.It helps. They don't need full sun ALL day. Some varieties never will get this green.Varies a lot.
Kyle :-)
Can I have one of your first cuttings?
Promise to take extra careful care of it? lol
I have to make a trip to Wally World @ least once a wk for work!
I am serious!
Thanks for the tip. I am using Miracle Grow Plant Food once a week. I'll look for the Walmart brand next time, since I am sure it will be less expensive, but does a good job, as seen in your pictures. Do you feed them more than once a week? I am using the water souluble feeds once a week, my plants seem to be doing great, but wondering what will happen if I up it to twice a week.
Gardenbug, why don't you try half strength twice a week, that should work well in your climate. I recently learned that in climates where the nights are hot plants continue to take up nutrients all night; as opposed to areas with moderate temps and cooler evenings where the the plants rest at night . I interpret that to mean those of us in the hot zone should probably probably be more diligent about fertilizing.
I checked today and the one from Wally world is called "Expert" brand water soluable fert. 24-8-16 perfect for hibiscus since they resent too much Phosphorus (the middle number)
Kyle :-)
Liz you are so right! I LOVE it.
We get the Bahama Bay series here but I haven't seen this one. Shoot.
Really nice, Kyle.
Beautiful! That bloom on a plate looks good enough to eat :-)
Western....or French dressing??? LOL
:-)
Ranch, it's all about the ranch, lol ;-)
I know that all jokes aside, hibiscus are supposed to be edible, but I just can't imagine eating something so pretty. Now on the other hand, when my DH complains about my "way too many plants", I tease him that he better be careful, or I'll brew him some special Brugmansia tea!
(j/k, of course)
karen
Oh Karen, you are so bad. LOL
