Fall orders to David Liddle : Instructions for ordering

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

To all of those interested in ordering from David Liddle ( and based on the number of D-mail, and email that I have received over the last week, things look good) I took the liberty of copying and pasting Ann's (mskitty's) very helpful and detailed instructions. I will note that where her original post read: "Ann Strahm" , I changed it to Sara Hutcheson, and the order cut off date, will also be changed. Other than that, all credit goes to Ann, for the original instruction content.

I have had several requests for an early order if possible, so I would like to shoot for a cut-off date of August first for this order (I have found that it takes a little over a month, so this should put us into mid September - not too hot, or too cold)

If anyone needs a copy of David's catalog, please d-mail me with your email address, and I will send it to you. I would also like addresses asap, so that I can compile them on mailing labels, which will also serve as my sign-up list.

I will not be able to charge the same rate that Ann did - the shipping rate for priority mail boxes has changed with the postage increase, and is now $8.95.

For now, that is all that I can think of, if anyone else comes up with something that needs to be added, please let me know.

Thanks,
Sara

"1. Orders to David Liddle for the "Sara Hutcheson ordering group" can be done anytime between now and August 1, 2007.

Instructions for the group order:

2. Ordering cuttings from David Liddle

a. Each person will need to place his or her order directly with David Liddle. Here is how:

3. Email your order to [e-mail:davidjliddle@bigpond.com]

a. In the email make sure to specify that your order is part of the group order being sent to SARA HUTCHESON
b. Make sure to include your email address in the order so he can contact you with the total you will be charged

c. Indicate, in your email, the type of payment you will be making to him (i.e. credit card, paypal, or direct deposit)

c1. If you are ordering with a credit card make sure to provide the credit card information (name on card, card number, expiration date).
NOTE: If you are not comfortable sending this info via email, note this in your order email and then fax him the credit card information. His fax number is located on the first page of his catalogue.

c2. If you prefer to paypal the payment to him, note you will do this in your email. You can paypal him by accessing your own paypal account and making the payment to [e-mail:davidjliddle@bigpond.com]

c3. Direct deposit can be made at Swift Code, CTBAAU2S; BSB, 064812; Account number, 00360202

4. As soon has the necessary certificates are in his hands, he will process the orders and arrange the Phytosanitary inspection.

5. David will send the package with everyone's orders to me. Each order is packed separately in a gauze bag and each cutting is labeled with the name of the person who ordered it. (Please remember, the costs for shipping to the U.S. and phytosanitary cert. are divided by the number of cuttings ordered)

6. David will then send an invoice to each individual who ordered (via email), letting them know the exact amount owed him from that person.

7. When the order arrives to me (Sara) he will process the credit cards for that invoiced amount.

a. If you are paypal-ing him the money, you will need to paypal the money to him at that time.

8. I will immediately unpack the big box from Liddle and send each person's cuttings to them via USPS Priority Mail.

a. Please note that I will only be charging you for the shipping cost from me to you, and with very few exceptions, that will be the base rate for priority mail. I would ask that each of you send that to me prior to me mailing out the cuttings, and you can do so by sending me the money via paypal or a check - whatever you prefer. I would also ask that if your mailing cost ends up being more than the base rate, that you are honorable and forward me the additional money if requested.

9. Please read this additional information provided by David: "It takes three days to get to the USA from us but USDA can take a number of days to inspect them and send them on their way, so allow seven days for passage. Because exchange rates and banking charges influence the final cost, the price often does not agree exactly with the amount paid."

Finally, please remember to consider what kind of cuttings you order and remember that no matter what, when ordering from such a long distance, not every cutting is going to make it. I will be sending everything out immediately, but as David points out, there is almost a week's difference between when he sends the cuttings and when they arrive to me, then, an additional 2-3 days from the time I send them until they get to you. In other words, we are ordering big cuttings, but they will be taking a stressful trip with no water or light for up to 10 days.

Hopefully others who have ordered from Liddle in the past will be kind enough to offer some advice on what not to order. I suspect that cuttings with smaller vines and leaves will not do as good as hoyas with fleshy leaves and vines. I am no expert and my assumptions may be unfounded (mere gut instincts).

One last note (I'm sorry if this seems whiny, I just want to be upfront) - If something you order does not survive, try not to get upset with me. I am saying this because I do not want to become the mean lady who cost someone money. And, even the best intentioned person, who might really like me, will naturally be very upset if an expensive cutting doesn't make it. So, please consider what you are ordering, and realize that I am going send everything out immediately, but because of the nature of this kind of ordering, some things may not make it. " {end quote}

A huge " THANK YOU" to Ann for all of your work on these instructions - This would have taken me quite a while to compile and type - you're the best!!

Sounds good, Sara. Do you have a paypal account, or would you prefer the $5.10 to be mailed to you?
Well, off to the porch with a diet coke and the catalog.....

Karen,

Whatever works best for you, is fine with me. I got your address, thanks. My paypal act. is the same as my email: hutchnme@bresnan.net. I can't wait to get caught up on my vacation laundry, shopping, and bills, so that I can sit down and get my order together - I have found that the sooner I send my list to David, the better chance I have of getting everything I request - Yipppiiiiiiii - nothing better than new hoyas!!

Sara

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Hello All,

Just wanted to bump this up. I have been getting more and more requests for David's catalog, and didn't want everyone to have to search for this.

Happy 4th of July!!

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

I am sorry everyone. I just discovered that the rate for shipping priority mail boxes increased with the new rate for stamps. It is now $8.95. I have copied and pasted the information from the USPS website, and would appreciate it if everyone who has paid would be willing to add the additional $3.85. Normally, this would be something I could take care of, but since there are more than 12 people on the list so far, and it isn't August 1st yet, that is a considerable expense to me.

I am sincerely sorry for the mistake, and understand your irritation and annoyance, as I am feeling the same way, with myself, for not researching this first.

My apologies to all of you,
Sara

Sara - plese don't be so hard on yourself! Postage is what postage is - and all of us who have had orders to David Liddle (via Ms. Kitty the last two times) understand and appreciate that this is time comsuming for the one handling all the transactions. You're doing a fantastic job! By the way, this hoya hog's order is in, and I am waiting semi-patiently until the end of August......!!!

Karen

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Thank you for your understanding.....either it was late, or I can't do simple math, because the difference was $3.85, not 4.85. I really appreciate your faith in me - I will refund any left over shipping money once this is all completed.

HA! - speaking of hoya pigs, I submitted my list a while ago, and apparently it was too early, as I am already thinking of cuttings that I need to add on to my "completed" list to David. Yikes......

Sounds like this isn't too hard of a process, once everything is ironed out though. With the boxes in my garage, mailing labels printed, and David individually packaging everything, I believe Ann when she told me that the turn around time can be less than an hour after they arrive.

Cheers,
Sara

lol Sara,
Are you going to email David with your revisions? There are more I would like to add also, but I have to be sooo careful. I went hoya NUTS so far this summer and I already don't know what I'm going to do with all of these plants when I have to find them new homes in this small apartment this winter. I'm so envious of people with nice homes and big windows and greenhouses! Sigh, that will be me someday. I hope!

Jen

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

LOL Jen, it is already done!!

I think that I am done now - I grow strictly indoors too, so I have started hanging some plants off the bottom of others (doesn't look half bad), and stacking, and clustering tightly....and...and....Whatever else I have to do to "fit just one more in" HA!

I keep thinking I am full, yet I ordered 9 new cuttings - eek!! Last order this spring, I only ordered 6, and was just kicking myself from here to Sunday.

Just remind yourself, that there is always room for 1, 2, 15 more!

Hugs,
Sara

Carnegie, PA

Oh Sara you are BAD! Don't tempt me! Now that I know I can add to my order, it's gonna be in the back of my mind constantly lol. I'm so easily persuaded....ok, well maybe just......1 or 2...........oh the dilemma!!!! There are 2 that I want, heuschkeliana, both the pink and yellow, but I talked myself out of them because the leaves kind of resemble my brevialata. But I just know if I don't get them, I'll be sorry lol. I love the little flowers.
AGH ok, you talked me into it.
Why are hoyas so addictive??? My boyfriend just told me yesterday that I can't get anymore cuz we're running out of room...so I'm not telling him about this order LOL. He'll never know the difference. ;)

Jen

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Jen, Once you get enough plants, it will be harder and harder for your BF to know if a new one has been snuck in or not!! HeeHee.

DH simply doesn't ask. He has figured it out that he doesn't really want to know, cauz he won't like the answer anyway!! Unfortunately I have been collecting hoyas long enough that he is beginning to recognize when one is a duplicate if I happen to be at Home Depot with him. He has graduated from "completely oblivious" to "I am pretty sure that you already have that one".

The kids went through a "tell on mommy" phase that was extremely irritating, but I have pretty much stomped on that one!! At 8 and 10 they have figured out that no matter how funny seeing DH get irritated is, it is WAY less funny to loose major privileges for rather long periods of time when MOMMY gets in trouble! HA!

Cheers,
Sara

Oh yeah Sara,he can't tell when I get a new plant now as it is lol. Luckily, he's at work when the mailman comes. I don't think he will ever get past the oblivious stage. I get so excited and want to show him something new about a plant and his eyes glaze over lol.
That's funny about your kids. I'm glad my cat doesn't know the difference...she's bratty enough though that I think if she WAS a kid, I might have the same problem!
Well, I went ahead and added those 2 to my list. I'm glad I did. I can't wait, getting so excited!

It is funny reading about you women talking about your DHs (I'll go out on a limb and guess this is short for Dear Husband). I could say all of the exact same things you are saying about your DHs about my DW (Dear Wife)!

Doug

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I just got the catalog (thanks, Sara!) and since I'm new to hoyas can someone knowledgable d-mail me??? I'm into unusual plants (orchids, species iris) and I have several hoyas from HD. I'm looking for more rare ones but I know nothing! Help!

Alhambra, CA(Zone 9a)

Just devoured that catalog. Thanks. Will be getting my order in right away!

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

How many cuttings are you folks buying for each plant? Are they big cuttings (those who have ordered from DL before)? I'm very close to my order but I need to know how many of each to order. Thanks.

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Boojum, The cuttings tend to be generous, I would just order one, and cut it into a couple of pieces. That way you could perhaps order more varieties.......Just a suggestion.

To everyone else who is ordering, I received an email from David Liddle last night, asking if anyone else will be ordering. I am under the impression that he is pressed for time, and would like all orders in asap. If everyone who is planning to order would please get their lists in, and their address and shipping $ to me, that would be great.

Here is the list of people whose orders David has:

Sara H.
Becky J.
Cindy S.
Dawn M.
Doug C.
Gabi R.
John (I have had an email but no list yet)
Kyoko I.
Leo S.
Jennifer S.
Mark R.

Thanks,
Sara

I will work on my order tomorrow and send you shipping money with Paypal. Thanks for the advice on cuttings.

Macon, IL(Zone 5b)

Well, I'm confused - I emailed my list to him on 7/5 - even sent a copy to myself, which I did receive. Oh well, I'll re-email my list.
Karen

Silex, MO(Zone 5b)

I agree with Sara on only ordering one cutting- I've only ordered one of each and end up cutting them into a few pieces every time. :)

Alhambra, CA(Zone 9a)

OK. Thanks for the update. Will get the order in.

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Well, things are starting to move. Everyone please send positive energy to our cuttings, and picture them NOT getting caught up in customs, but smoothly on their way!! HA! ( I recently watched "The Secret" - all about the law of attraction and positive energy.....we'll see if it works).

Here is the list of people who I know have ordered, in that I have an address, and shipping money. If you have ordered and are not on this list, that means I either don't have shipping money from you, don't have your address, or have no idea that you joined in, and you probably need to get a hold of me. D-mail is fine, or email: hutchnme@bresnan.net.

Yes, thanks for the update!

Sara, if you don't get your consignment in the next day or so, you might want to consider contacting APHIS at the port your parcel arrived. You can find the their phone number inside the packet of information sent when you got your import permit. I have had to track down imported parcels more than once. The first time the parcel ended up in a corner of the inspectors office (forgotten) and the other time they got confused when changing the mailing label on the package.

I am sending positive vibes to your package! Hope it arrives safe, sound and soon!

Thanks Mel.

Sara...they are blowing smoke at you. US Customs has an office at the USPS, but they are NOT part of US Customs. From US Customs it goes to USDA (or first it goes to USDA and then....). They are all independent and often at different parts of the Airport. Trust me...I have had to track them down physically.

It is important not to worry!!! Hoyas are tough!!! They survive in collectors backpacks for weeks!!! Some I have learned AFTER rehydrating them: the BEST rooting medium is straight perlite. I learned this from Ted Green and I am a firm believer. He has hauled plants around for weeks and saved most of them....so have I.

Carol

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Thanks, Carol. Good to know!

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Thank you Carol, that was what Ann told me also...."not to worry" Basically they will get here when they get here, and I will do what I can to help the process, but in the end it comes down to hoyas are tough. I do appreciate hearing from those who have done it before.
