Question re. Plumie-Cuttings.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I've potted 2 sections of my white plumie this winter. The tip section has taken roots and is well on its way. However, the middle section, just not showing outward progress. I unpotted it yesterday, and was delighted to find there is healthy root system forming. I'm giving this cutting full sun, how soon can I expect to see leafy grow on the leave-less cuttings?

It sounds like it is a center cut, which takes longer to show that it is rooted because it has to push out side branches before it can push out leaves. This process can take several months. I would not disturb the roots again because they can break easily, which will delay the rooting process.

Thank you, Clare for being so helpful as always.

A 'center cut'?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Yes, DStartz;
It is, it has rooted, but slow to put out leaves and new branches. The parent plant has formed two new branches at the cutting site.

Sorry. What is a center cut?

Donna,
My plumie was getting tall, it was becoming top heavy. So I decided to trim it down. The top cut, with leafy growth, then the next section b/w the top and the bottom, thus center. :-) All are well, I can assure you from what I've seen. The top portion grows just as fast as the parent's plant, the mid section cut, since there is no leave to help on the photosethesis, thus grows bit slower as it turns out.

Thanks, Kim!

Welcome, dstartz. :-)

Kim, plumerias are hardy to Zone 10 and 11. They are tropical trees. You would need to grow them in containers and overwinter them indoors in your zone. Check out the overwintering section here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/599185/

Clare, thank you so much for the link.

Hi Lily_love,
yesterday we had 114 in my backyard and expect hotter today. Happy 4th of July!!!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Hi there,
It's hot today, no rains in sight. Though not yet the 3 digits. How is your Denium doing with the hot sun? Will plumeria fare well there? My tropical collections take our heat well (the humidity helps). Is it humid there? I visit NM infrequently. Love it there, simply it was hot, but if you get under shaded trees, it was cool as cucumber due to its dried heat. I try to coach my daughter who lives out there on how to grow plumies, but she didn't fare well. I'm going to have to fly back out there and take her by the hands with raising plumies. LOL
If it's dried. Are the fireworks restricted? Likes in some part of Ca.? I hate that for all affected, since it's a National Holliday, and some are restricted, due to safety, in which I understand. No objection.
Happy 4Th. to you and yours.

Yes, it is illegal for people to set off fireworks here, and since it is so hot and dry here, they can easily start fires and burn down people's homes and destroy forests. We have several fires going right now. It's terrible. Fireworks are only allowed by sanction businesses who take all the necessary precautions. I hate fireworks because of what the noise does to animals.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

My adeniums get moved to filtered light when it starts getting hot. Plumerias get by with a little help from their friends. Fireworks were cancelled in Flagstaff, AZ (all AZ towns in forested areas) as the fire danger is extremely high right now. There is currently a fire burning on the Mogollon Rim (started by lightning). We have had drought conditions now for 13 years, so our forest are at extreme risk.

Even though its a dry heat, after about 105 degrees you sweat so much that you get wet, and the body is unable to cool itself - there is also danger from the heat at these degrees even if you are drinking lots of water..... At 110 degrees even the shade is too hot.

Ok, so here is some "Fireworks" substitute. for you and Clare to bring in July 4th. Without the noises. Presenting my Clematis "Fireworks".
Sincerely;
Kim D.

Hi Kim,
what a lovely blossom!!!!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I'm glad you enjoyed the Fireworks indoors - so to speak. :-) Hope all is well.

Ah, I must prefer that kind of beauty. We are so dry right now because we've had the least amount of rain in over a hundred years. There are two fires right now going in the forests of northern Santa Barbara County. It is just terrible. Fire fighters are being treated for heat exhaustion as they fight the fires.

My prayers go out the the people, those heros fire fighters. And surrounding areas.

Joining you in prayer, Lily.

Clare, where do y'all get your water from?
