two Banana plant together

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

I had two very big banana plants that I nursed over the winter indoors.. Well they did pretty good until I put them in the ground outside... They died but before they were finished they both gave me two babies.. Now my question is this. How do I seperate these and when???? I am including pictures...
I want to thank anyone ahead for any help...

This is the first one and you can see where they are seperate, the next picture you cant tell that one is two... I dont want to kill them but I dont think they are going to grow very well together...

Susan,

I always use an electric knife to separate them. I'm not kidding. If I have potted bananas that pup, I cut between the parent and the pup, right down the middle. I repot both halves and keep them well-watered. I have never lost a banana (dwarf Cavendish) doing this.

I imagine the process would be similar for you. Split the distance between parent and pup with a shovel, going at least eight inches deep. Remove the pup, fill the hole with good soil as a bonus for the parent rewarding you with offspring. Plant the pup and water it well. :)

I would say separate them now, but others may have other opinions.

Thank you for your help. I am off to work now but we are suppose toget rain so that may make it a little easier to get them apart....
THanks again.

my experience with bananas is you might kill the adult tree but if the roots are in good condition, they will come back as pups almost every time. We had a group of about 6 adult banana trees that we removed since they were outgrowing their spot. Chopped them off about 2 feet above ground then dug up the stumps and roots. Well one of the roots we must not have gotten, and now we have another banana tree growing.
