Ideas for marginals for edge pond

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

I need some suggestions for short or shorter marginals for the edge of my pond. This was a farm pond that we had cleaned/dug out when we built our home as we wanted to look out on it from the back of our home.

It has a leak towards the top, because when it rains real heavy it fills up to the top, then in a few days it goes down several feet. It would be nice to get some sort of plant or plants that stay on the shorter side that can handle being covered by water for a short period of time and when the water leaks out still like being on the wet side. I would like to stay away from anything that is real invasive.

Any and all ideas will be welcomed.

Thanks, Deb

Deb, first check out the water plant co-op on DG here...

check out their marginals. The rest of the experts will have to advise you on good choices... I'm still a newbie on water gardens...

Iris might work...the japanese type, not bearded...taro (elephant ears) i have mine submerged...may not be hardy for your zone...love cat-tails but can be invasive, and too tall....look around your area, at other bog gardens. wild plants can be nice if not invasive..i have harvested some from road crews, and they have worked nicely...(if there are any...lol) wish i was more helpful! sue

Most marginal plantings are quite invasive as far as I know, to name a few, horsetails, lizard's tail, cattails, chamonilles variegated, or plain. How about some hardy Lotus? There must be some hardy variety out there. I've one that survive our zone, not sure in yours.
