My upcoming bonanza

Floyd, VA(Zone 6b)

I must have about 35 varieties of streps and I do the horizontal leaf propagation so the numbers of plants can be staggering. I am having a hard time getting leaves of new varieties on DG. BUT I have a friend recently made who has about three hundred varieties. He is going to send me a huge number of plants and leaves in a few weeks. I just look at his three page single spaced list and drool.

I have to say that of all the varieties I have had bloom, Cherry Pie and Blue Mars remain the Miss Hollywood stars still. I have a long terracotta colored planter with perlite on the bottom. It has about four Cherry Pies in it, and they are blooming one at a time. When it gets really mature, it should be spectacular. I am thinking of doing the same thing with Blue Mars.

Really, I must get into the twenty first century and buy a camera to upload some of the beauties. All of you take such gorgeous pictures.

Number one, gloriag, you do need to get a camera so we can see your beautiful streps. 300 varieties? Wow! 35 varieties isn't too shabby on your part either. I have Blue Mars and it is a great plant. Grows nice and large. Robust with larger size blossoms. Cherry Pie I will have to get.

I would be happy to send you some leaves but I could kick myself for this. I recently re-potted a bunch of them and so unlike me, I didn't label them, @##$%$%^^, so now have to wait till they bloom again to see who they are. Do you grow any variegated ones? I'll be happy to send you leaves of a couple streps that I know for sure or wait until mine bloom again to send more. Most have seedpods and that slows the blooming down

Yes, gloria, you definitely need a camera! I would love to see pictures of all your Streps. I can't imagine having 300 varieties of anything! LOL

Edited to say:

Snow, I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who forgets to label plants sometimes! :o)

That is a beautiful pot of blooming streps you have there Snowrose. They look so pretty standing so straight and tall.

gloriag do you have the good old fashioned kind of camera? Any of the places that develop film can also make you a picture CD that you can then put into your computer and upload pictures from. Just a thought as I too would love to see all of your streps and the different ways you pot them up.

Wow! Gloriag .... 35 Streps! Wish I could learn to do good with these plants! And, I also wish I had enough room for a few more! I find that these plants are a bit difficult in my care. I only have 4 very small ones I got in trades and they don't seem to grow very fast. Is it normal for the leaves to kinda dry up and shrivel?

Snow: Is that photo the one named Blue Mars?? It is one Gorgeous Plant and I love the pot you have it in too!

Your friend who has more than 300 varieties ... he must have a greenhouse! I can just picture it ... one beautiful picture!

Oh yes, please get a camera and post your photo's! We are all drooling here!

plantlady, the ends of the leaves do get brown sometimes. Just take scissors and cut back to the green. If one seems unhealthy just cut it off at the base. They put out leaves so quickly it won't be missed. Remember they love eastern or northern exposure, flouescent lights, or filtered light (through a curtain or blinds.)

Thanks Gloriag. Mine have been in an East or South window since I got them. I had a couple under the grow lights, but then I think I read they like it a bit cooler so I figured it was too hot under the lights. They just are so small and don't seem to be growing very quickly at all.

Thanks, bmedel!

Snow: Perfect Name ... it's just as pretty as a Trumpeter Swan!
