Rooster Spur Broke!

Lapeer, MI

So this morning around 10 a.m. I let my chickens out and I also fed them. I usually just watch them to see if anything goes wrong or to collect eggs. So I spot an egg and bring it inside. On my way back I notice Rafael's leg was bleeding. I looked at it closely and its spur was hanging loose. The other chickens were just sipping at its blood (pretty sick). So I tried to catch it to clean up the mess but before I new it his spur was off.

So I finally caught it under the coop by the opposite foot. I grabbed a paper towel and some water. I dabbed the paper towel into the water and held it on the spot.

I came back about an 1 hr. later to check up on it and the bloody spot was black.

Did I do the right thing to it? Should I of done something different?
Thanks ahead of time for your replies

As long as it stopped bleeding it should be alright, if it starts bleeding put a bandaid on it, the other chickens will kill for blood. I have heard of people taking off the spurs on there roosters, so It should heal fine.

Do they grow back?

I haven't had that happen (yet) I would think since it is a nail, it will unless the "root" was ripped out too.

Well the entire spur came out. Are the roots big enough to see? Cause I didn't see any. Rafael seems to be doing fine.

He's like me or you losing a nail, the nail bed is deep. I wouldn't worry about it. That area has low blood flow so the it should heal fine (that what my vet tells everytime I bring a bird in with a nail injury) If I was to bet, I think it will grow back.

Good, thanks. I hope it grows back cause it looks pretty bad having only one spur left. LOL

I had 2 roosters that would spar off any time they got together. I noticed that one of them had lost a spur also. That's been some time back, and he's fine. Not so 'cocky' as he used to be with the other rooster though, now that he's at a lesser advantage. He tends to mind his own business and stay with his own hens more so now.

Did its spur grow back?

On my other chicken forum, there was a whole thread about how to twist off the spurs ( eww and oww!) so, I'm sure he will be fine and it will eventually grow back.

I haven't noticed if it has started growing back. I'll have to look to see.

I just hope its "roots" didn't come out, cause I doubt it would grow back then.

Well, I think he'll be able to get along fine without if, if that is the case, he'll just be a little asymmetrical from the back :)

Darn it. I lost both of those roosters to the flooding and predators this past week. Guess I'll never know if his spur would have grown back. They were both nice roosters that never offered to attack us, just each other at times, but I usually kept them penned apart.

Now the little banty rooster I still have is a teeny tiny little fellow that will look for any opportunity to get you. He is so tiny, but he's a mess. His spurs are about an inch long. I can't turn my back on him at all. The only reason he's still around, is because DH likes him, and there's no meat on him at all. hehe. A real stinker !

Oh, sorry to hear about your two roosters. I hope the flood goes away. Not to add any more bad news but I think I heard on the news yesterday that you and Texas were suppose to get more heavy rain, but don't take my word for it.

I used to have a bantam rooster, (It was a mix of something else too) we used to let the flock free range. So every time it spotted me it went for me. And wow did that roo run quick. And also when it struck, it left damage. It spurs too, were about 1" long. But then one day a hawk got hold of its little body, took him away, and left only feathers.

What the sad thing was besides its death was that we didn't even take a picture of it, cause we hated it so much.

Awhhhh. .......... Yeah, you hate them cause they are such stinkers, but you really hate it if something happens to them. All that's left of the little toot is a few feathers, and not even a pic. At my house, it's kind of a love/hate relationship. He's so doggone cute and tiny, you can't help but laugh at him. But when he gets ya, you'd like to wring his little chicken neck.

Those little bantam roosters are quick ! They can be on you before you even see them coming. First time he hit me, I was so surprised at the force they hit with. They hit really hard. And those spurs are so sharp. Of all the other roosters I've had, he's the only one that really wanted a piece of anyone for no reason.

Ours...... like yours, will eventually meet his match one of these days.
