Come on guys, we can't play anymore so it is up to you to keep us interested.
Kohaku pronounced (co-hah-ku) white body with red patches the most popular variety of jap. koi. This is the one that usually wins big in Japan koi shows.
Sanke pronounced (sawn-kay) white is base color of body with red like the kohaku with some black spots on the upper body. Sometimes you'll see some black on pectoral fins (those are the two fins that stick out from the sides of the koi) the pectoral fins would be like arms if you turned the koi into a cartoon. Also, some black can sometimes be seen on the tail.
Ki Utsuri pronounced (key-oot-sir-ee) This is a yellow and black koi.
You can look up Pan Intercorp on google this is a koi dealer that had a pronounciation guide to koi where you can hear the Japanese names for koi being spoken.
There are lots of koi clubs, dealers and koi shows throughout the world. You can google Koi USA and find more info through their website and magazine.
Wondering how to tell the sex of your koi? Okay, go back to cartoon thinking for a minute. If koi had hips, generally the females are bigger in that region. This doesn't hold true all the time; however, it works most of the time.
Oops! My semi-ADD must be kicking in I just noticed it was requested 1 koi per post. Oh well, I always try to get everything done at once anyway. I guess I just got my 3 in.

Oh Oh! Based on the hip thing, looks like my "Festus" should be called "Festina"
I think I have mostly males in my pond. One of my females got eaten by something. I don't know if it was a raccoon or if she was spawning and the others pushed her out of the pond and she died in the excessive heat. Her body was on a rock and almost all was eaten so I suspect the coon. One of my favorite white ones also. The second pair I bought.
Raccoons, herons, ponding can be a risky endeavor. I have one obvious female, the rest are anybody's guess. A fish that's eaten is a fish that was caught by a raccoon. I think, just maybe, that mine are now too large to get hauled out of the pond by a raccoon. Not that they couldn't do some heavy damage in trying. They are all over 16 inches and the largest are at 24". Next year I might have to consider finding one or two a new pond. I don't want to compromise the whole bunch with any water quality problems. The pond is only 2000 gals. And, these fish just keep on eating and growing.
Yes, sounds like they need a new place to hang out.
I have the perfect home for them here, snapple :~) Just let me know! LOL
Lana
This one that I lost was about 12"-14". It must have been a large coon to drag it out.
