Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

After trying to grow these plants from a leaf I think I finally got it right. Now how long before I can leave the top opened on them?

Even leaves that rotted have baby plants. Will they grow? So many questions for first thing in the morning.lol

That's wonderful! I'm so encouraged by this! The leaves I've put down like this are still green. You've given me so much hope! :o) Those little baby plants are so cute. When did you put these down? And the ones that rotted but still have babies are yet another testimonial to the extreme will-to-live of Gessies. :o) Thank you so much for posting these.

Since I can't answer any of your questions, I guess I should have kept quiet, but I just wanted you to know how happy I am for you. :o)

jannich, it is never too early in the morning to say "Congratulations"..............i am verrrrry impressed that you can grow them this way.....................amazing and thanks for sharing........I have decided that you can grow anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a leaf Gail sent to me the end of May.I soooo want this var. one to grow. Some pieces are rotting but some are still nice.

Amy, Good Morning! The leaves with the babies were put down the May first.I'm not to sure on how long before I transplant them.I think the secert is not watering them to much.I only misted the leaves 2 times I think,I kept them pretty dry.
Now if I can keep them alive is another story:)

I've got mine in an open container with no drain holes, in a west window. I water them quite well so there is a bit of water standing in the bottom of the container, then let the soil dry to the point of being still just damp, (not dry at all, though), and then water again. Maybe I am watering them too much, but they're still green, so I'm still hoping. Mine were put down June first, so I guess I'll stop looking for babies for a couple more weeks. LOL There's not a doubt in my mind that you'll be able to keep them alive, Jan. :o)

I have a chance at these........3 leaves of variegated strep and one Vertigo chirita leaf...

Nothing roots in two weeks for me except cuttings of small begonias, columnea, etc....

I love how the plantlets look all lined-up, jannich. Now I will give that method another try. One day I was potting streps and had a couple spare leaves which I put in water until I could get around to them later when I had more time to plant them properly. Needless to say, they've been ignored and now look what's happened.

Amy,Sounds like you have a nice setup for the strep leaves too.I grew these under the lights but I wondering if its to warm for them.

The leaves look good Gail! I hope they grow for you. That chirita is a pretty one.

Hi Snow,The plantlets remind me of little soilders.lol. I didn't know the streps root in water.I have to try it. Another var.one I love them.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

OK, Snowrose, you know I 'hate' anyone that can even grow a strep in water!!!!!!!!!!! maybe I will try that method!

Congrats on your babies Jannich!!
You did a great job.

I'm hoping my streps will sprout some babies...maybe there's hope for me too.

Snow, I love that they will grow roots in water! That's something I might try too.

Jan, it seems that several of us have had plenty of problems getting them to grow this way. I think just the fact that you got babies at all of it is proof you did everything just right! :o)

Snow, I didn't know they would root in water, either. Thanks for letting us know! :o)

congrats!

jannich,
You can start leaving the top partially open and check for watering more often. Looks like you have a good crop going. If you leave them on the leaf a good while, they will grow to maturity almost and you will have dozens on each leaf. Isn't it exciting!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

The leaves rooting in water was surprising. I guess it's the same as violet leaves? I'm not recommending to do it this way, but.....

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, at least it proves that they MIGHT survive at my house without the standard AV umbrella...lol
I really should take up water gardening...;-)

jannich I am another one you have given hope to! I have some strep leaves down in AV potting soil and I know they are getting some roots because I was impatient and pulled some up :)) a week or so ago. And today I noticed the tiniest of a green slip starting to come up on one. But some of the others are looking like they may be deteriorating in spots even though they too have roots on other spots. So after seeing yours here I'm going to leave them all alone and just see what transpires! Babies from even the leaves that rotted away, wow!

I am missing so many threads on this forum the past couple of days! I need to pay more attention!

Jan: That is one pretty photo of those little green baby streps! Congratulations! They look so cute! I put down two leaves of 'Midas' on 6/08 and they haven't done anything ... I don't think I will get any babies from them. I put them in straight moist perlite in one of those take out salad containers with the plastic lid. I will have to try again. The only decent size plant I have is one I got from Starfly/Eunice called 'Dibley's Gwen'. I guess I will take a leaf or two off that one and try again.

Gail: What is your secret? I've tried Chirita leaves and no luck with those either! Wonder why I have no trouble with AV leaves but can't seem to get Strep or Chirita leaves to grow babies?? Oh well ... I will keep trying!

plantladylin I'm not getting your date for when you put your leaves down (are we talking the European way and you mean June 8th??) but I can tell you mine have been down for about 6 weeks and I am just now starting to see anything at all. I just have them under the kitchen cabinet fluorescent lights and we see temps in the 40's each night, if not cooler (we are to have 33 tonight) so my house really cools off at night. I realize this slows down things for me drastically....... but still they are coming along. So don't give up on yours unless your saying you put them down in 8 of '06 LOL!!!!

Oh .. yes I meant 6/8/07 (June 8th) ... so I should give it much more time I guess! :) I am kinda impatient sometimes!

Thanks for that info!

Wow! Y'all are having 30 and 40 degree nights in June?? Amazing! We have been so hot here lately ... Too Hot actually, mid 90's daytime and mid 70's at night and soooo humid! I can just imagine what August and September will be like. Ugh. Think I will be spending a lot of time inside in the air conditioning!

Wouldn't want temp's in the 30's at night ... that's too cold, but I wouldn't mind @ 50!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have heard that streps will tolerate a cooler environment than either avs and especially episcias....they want it like the tropics!!!!

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Now wonder streps are my favorites then!! I'm drawn to them cause they would actually like living in my house year round. LOL

Actually in the winter we heat with wood and I have an upstairs loft area that stays nice and warm, so I will make sure and move the less cool tolerant of my plants up there. I plan on having some grow lights set up there by winter anyway!

And just what are you two ladies doing up at this hour anyway. LOL I figure Gail is at least an hour ahead of me and Lin must be 2 or 3 hours ahead and it's 10:35 mountain time here!

The truth is:
I went to bed over an hour ago............the reason I can't sleep is because some 'fool' put all the bulls in the pasture next to my bedroom. (LOL) I think they miss the cows a lot!!!!
They make the worst sounds an animal can make.................just put a giant fan in my bedroom with the ceiling fan on high.........hope i don't freeze tonight............better turn the air conditioning up a notch or two!!!!
