Hello All.
I thought I would share a few pics of vines blooming in my garden this morning. First, Aristolochia trilobata.
Vine flowers in the garden
Cool. Reminds me that I need to repot my pipe vine. I'm sure the soil is about depleted. I like both the leave and the bloom on the Bitter Melon, but have to say that I have no idea what it is. Is your Maypop in the ground or a pot? Mine went crazy in the ground, but it all died out the first winter. I was really concerned because it was so invasive and I figured it would take some hefty work to get rid of it. I didn't need vines growing all over my daylilies and other perennials. Again, I like your pictures. You and your plants must be enjoying our warm weather now. The plants sure look happy.
bitter melon grows out of control here but i like it
Hey Paul, save me some seed, would you? No problem if you can't. I love anything yellow and maybe here it wouldn't be invasive.
Beautiful, Eric! You are way ahead of me in vine blooms. Is the bitter melon the one they call balsam pear?
:) Donna
Thank you Shirely. I stumbled across the bitter melon plant at a local garden center and found it intriquing. I really know nothing about it. My Maypop is in a pot. I found it very easy to overwinter in the basement just keeping barely alive. I'm going to to plant one in the ground this summer to see if I can overwinter it with heavy mulching, but I have my doubts. We are WAY far north of its native range. Thank you again for the kind comments!
Thanks Paul. I expect the bitter melon to be much more behaved here!
Thank you Donna. These are really some of the first vines blooms of the season for me. Most of the other Passionflowers and Aristolochias are really taking off now, so I expect lots of blooms soon. I don't know if bitter melon is also called balsam pear. I know bitter melon is utilized in Asian cuisine, but I have never seen or tried one (to my knowledge).
Although not technically a vine (it's more of a scrambler), here is Aristolochia clematatis. The flowers are small, but kinda cool, and definfitely Aristolochia-like. These made it through the past winter with light mulching.
