Squirrels digging!

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Anybody got a fool-proof method for keeping the squirrels from digging in containers, thus destroying plants? I already tried cayenne pepper and bloodmeal with no luck. HELP!

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

I know you said squirrels are causing the problem, but cats will do the same thing. So I looked for "cats digging in pots" and found these suggestings: cover exposed areas of soil with chicken wire or screening, aluminum foil crimped around the pot rim and fanned inward toward the plants, burying plastic forks with the business side up, use a payer of rock, shells, pinecones, layer the top with sections of prickly. I have seen plastic gadgets sold in gardening catalogs:

I think that prickly cat mat might work! When I got home a few minutes ago, they'd dug in another pot that I just planted last night--boogers! I'll try a few of those suggestions and see what works best. Thanks so much, Betty!
