SETTFest 1st annual Tomato Fest a Resounding Success!!

(Zone 7b)

Hi, folks -- if you weren't able to attend this year, think about doing so next year. It was a fantastic time!

We had a total of 24 attendees from various forums including Dave's Garden, Tomatoville, Gardenweb, and Tomatomania. That's outstanding for a first year event, and I was so glad to meet everyone! There were even a couple of folks that found out about the event as the result of google searches. According to the score sheets, folks brought a total of 89 tomato varieties. This is not to mention the array of cucumbers, peppers, herbs, homemade cold-pressed olive oil, mustard, fruit preserves, breads, pickled peppers, fresh salads, and desserts that people brought.

The unofficial taste winner of the event was JD's Special C-Tex. It is a variety likely based on Cherokee Purple or a similar black and bred in Conroe, TX (hence the C-Tex moniker) by a fellow named J.D. whose greenhouses provide many of the plants seen at Cornelius Nurseries. A lot of folks also liked Indian Stripe, and Brad's (Wild Boar Farms) striped varieties like Black and Brown Boar, Large Barred Boar, etc. Kellogg's Breakfast (brought by foolcontrol) was a pleasant surprise as well.

Because turnout was so good, we almost ran out of room at Benjamin Beason park. We used all the picnic tables and then some. ;-) There has already been some discussion about venues with better facilities for next year's event. Bryan/College Station is one possibility that's been mentioned.
