Container Gardening with Gesneriads...

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

So I bought a couple of really large ( 8 to 12 inch)SW pots and I'm considering doing a combo planting of some of my plants...episcias & streps maybe a little trailing Av, too...

Has anybody else out there tried to combine plants like in a dish garden???
I've seen some really outstanding show pics of dish gardens .

So share your thoughts and ideas....

Here's a pic of one of the bowls I'm going to do...

Beautiful! What are the episcias shown?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Inquiring minds need to know MsC what that wonderful lime colored episcia is??????

Oh what a purdy pot, MsC! And the Episcias are yummy! My Strep 'Cassandra' grows with her leaves sticking almost straight up. That might be a good one to put in the middle, if they all grow that way.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

That's a lovely pot and the episcias are gorgeous! I'm with the others in wanting to know the varieties.

I'm in on the chorus here! How pretty will that be all put together that way. And what a great idea, to combine some of the gessie's and make a dish garden. I think I need one right in the middle of my dining room table!

Those are such nice healthy looking episcias, names please!

Great Idea, I was thinking about putting together some different colored nematanthus or columnea together. Beautiful epi's.

Send me the pink one and you won't have to worry about it. :)

I think the bowl of plants will be pretty.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh good you guys are interested...lol

The episcias are just setting in the SW pot at the moment..I'm still toying with what I want to try in it....I had in mind to do a strep in the center and a "something or 2" around the outer edges???
Just not sure so I'm going to play with it a while and see...
The ones shown are:
~Alice's Aussie
~Ruby Red Dress
~Tiger Stripe
~Mint Julep in the back..the silver leaf is the back of the leaf.

So give me some ideas & pros or cons if you can think of them....

Thanks
MsC

I can't believe what I miss when I leave this sight for an hour or two!

Wow! MsC, those are absolutely Beautiful! I love your idea of dish gardens! I saw one at a local Garden Show in April that was really pretty...it had a couple of AV's, one Standard and one trailing mini ... and some other plants but I don't remember what they were - not Gessie's I don't think. I can't wait to see what you come up with for your container! I am not creative at all, so I'm afraid I wouldn't be much help with suggestions or ideas!

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Lin,
Well, some days I'm very creative~ someday's I'm just a crazed gardener

If I could get off here I could actually get things planted pics taken & threads answered..lol

I even started "trying" to join the "daytime folks"...no one is posting on my schedule...lol

MsC

(Zone 1)

LOL MsC. I understand totally!

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Ok.. 7dogs out, 7dogs in, 7dogs feed, one brushed, cat out, cat back in ,cat feed... birds feed, dishes done, supper arranged, plant messed picked up...plant messed picked ....other plant messed picked up... good grief I'm worse than a 3 yr old...

Hubby will be home shortly guess I'd better brush my hair & wash my face...lol

It's that 5 o'clock sudden slow down on DG...run ladies run...

MsC:)

(Zone 1)

hee hee ... MsC .... You are a Hoot! I'm still sitting here lurking on DG and Googling about different plants! You're making me feel guilty .... I'm getting off the computer now and going to see what hubby wants for dinner! I'm not gonna brush my hair or wash my face first though! :)

p.s. I did let two of the cats out and one other in ... that counts for doing something, doesn't it?

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Lin of course letting the cat out counts...it does at my house.:)

So I wonder if I could plant a Strep in the middle of this bowl and then some episca stolons & around the outside??? Are they comaptible enough....anyone have experience with both ???

MsC

I think they'd do alright MsC, as long as you were choosy with the Episcia you use. Since everyone says the lighter colored ones need to be in a terrarium, you probably wouldn't want to use one of those, but the darker colored ones would probably be fine. I've got either Chocolate Soldier or Grey Lady in a terracotta pot (a no-no for episcias, I'm sure) and it's about to bloom. I'm excited to see what you come up with! :o)

(Zone 1)

I look forward to seeing your finished container too! I think a Strep in the center would be perfect, since they are so large ... then Episcia's or some trailing plant on the outside.

I totally missed this thread! So did you do a combined planting?

LOL MsC! I understand totally! :)

Maybe we should talk Gessiegail into doing a dish garden with Gessie plants! She has lots of plants and is great at container gardens .... she used to have her own Container Garden Business. I bet she could make some Beautiful Gessie Container Gardens and they would thrive!

Hey Gail ... ya out there?

I bet she went to bed already!

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

rofl.

you are not.

These things take time to think through.... and no doubt one day it will just happen because you'll have 5 plants and 1 pot. lol.

I just found out that the sept ges soc mtg is going to have a presentation on gessie dish gardens. Could be interesting.....

I've never done mixed plantings except for the window box (all gessies that need to stay relatively consistently moist) and unintentional ones (self-seeding, self-rooting, and rhizome flakes from re-used soil....). Oh, and the occasional terrarium, though I have none going at the moment. That was on the "to do" list today as well .... didn't get to any of it. lol.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, I did plant it ~but decided to do a test planting with a few other plants to see how the wicking action is on this particular type pot.

It's a different material than the other pots I use.
I figured better safe than sorry... and I wnated time to think over my plant selection a bit more...

(Zone 1)

Isn't it funny how time kinda catches up with us and we don't get done half of what we expected to do? I don't know how you folks who work full time do it all! When I was a lot younger I could accomplish so much in one day ... not any more though! :) Maybe if I didn't spend so much time sitting here and yakking on DG I'd get more done? Nah .... doubt it.

..... Well, I'm going to eat ice cream! Chat with y'all more tomorrow after I repot a couple of things and water and feed some plants .....

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

So..... this is the trial planting.... not exactly a great pic... but they were 3.00 plants easily replaceable..:)

see, I knew you weren't chicken :D

That's a nice combo.

(Zone 1)

Very nice indeed! I love the look of that little palm tree in the background! I wonder how big it will get? Nice finish with the Spagnum Moss too. You did a great job!

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh good ... post of approval...:)

Well, I choose each of the plants for their certain growing habits... those that are similar to the ones I really wanted to plant in it... I'm going to watch and see how it goes.....

Lin, with my luck that lil palm will just be lucky to stay alive at my house...they prefer to be out doors from what I'm told.

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

now we know it's all a facade - she actually has everything planned right down to the details.... lol.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Very pretty, MsC! I have to say, you had inspired me, with your idea to do the mixed episcia container. I really like what you have done, but I was so looking forward to seeing all the episcias together!

I am planning one with nine different episcias in it... I am waiting for some of the rooted cuttings to get big enough to transplant. Of course, I will post photos when finished.

Come on MsC... you can do it!!!

Hahaha... well I alwasy have a plan (or more) but being "very left brained" I have real trouble sticking to a plan...

Thanks Karen,
I'm happy with it so far... I actually have another plan for the multiple episca planting with the strep dead center... I just need to find a spot for it when it's done... see I always have a PLAN....

MsC

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

We look forward to seeing the finished product!!!

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, thank you that sweet... that gives me the motivation I need... :)

Go MsC!!! Go MsC!!! Go MsC!!!

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks... I'll be sure to take a pic or two....

Ki,
Please be sure to take notes to share with us on th container gardens... I've seen some show pics that are just awesome...Rob's has a nice tutorial on his page on containers and I keep studying it off and on to remind me of ceratin principals...

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I love that new Fittonia............couldn't pass it up the other day at Lowes.........

(Zone 1)

Wow! Someone who plans things out! I am in Awe! :) I guess I'm kinda a "fly by the seat of my pants" kinda gal! If I were to make a plan, I'd get sidetracked with a different plan. LOL. Guess it wouldn't do me any good to read that info on Rob's site either .... principles?! Aaaah ... I'd forget them as soon as I read the tutorial! I am soooo bad .... I write myself notes to remember things and then replace the notes! Hubby is the Professor, guess you could call me the Absent Minded Professor's Wife!

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Gail,
I love fittonias and buy all I see but the stores here don't get them often so I only have 3 ....when I go to see my kids the stores down there have them. I also like those polka dot plants and can't find any here either???
Cross your fingers this one likes it's spot...it's so cute!

Lin, We're more alike than you'd think... I ALWAYS have a plan or 2 or 3 but getting me to stick with just one is a bit of a challenge ...my mind thinks faster than my body moves anymore..:)

MsC
