I went to another poultry auction last week, I had so much fun. There were 2 auctions going on at the same time and Dh wanted to go to the outside auction where the auction off pens, feeders, you name it, it's there. So I had to go to the poultry auction by myself. He told me that I could only bid on one type of chicken when we were looking at all the chicks that were going to be auctions off. I decided to bid on the the golden seabrights, they were so cute. So I marked down the number of the box so I could bid when they came. Sometimes I have a hard time understanding the auctioneer. So off to the auction I go. Up came 6 Araucanas that I didn't see when looking before the auction started so I thought maybe I would like them instead, so I bid and won the bid for $1.00 each, I was happy. Then came these 2 little Old English Self Blue Bantams, a mating pair, they were so cute, I thought 2 more won't hurt, so I bid again and won, $3.00 each, thats another $6.00, I was happy. Oh no, here comes the 5 little Goden Seabright Banties and I looked down on my card and saw that's what I really wanted so I bid again and won the bid $1.00 each, another $5.00, great prices. Then came some litte Red Golden Pheasants, I thought Dh didn't see them earlier so I would bid on them, ouch, I won the bid and paid $3.00 each for them. That was $36.00. Then I noticed out of the corner of my eye, my DH. He said what did you just buy, I said I bought you some pheasants to add to your collection. Well then he asked what elese did you buy, because he saw that I wrote everything down and gave me that look and said let's go. You are not allowed to buy another chicken this year, and no more auctions for you. I forgot to mention that the week before I won a bid on 6 black chicks, in the box I saw 3 black chicks with a yellow dot on there head and thought they must be barred rocks, and Thank God 3 of them are Barred Rock chicks, now I hoping the are hens instead of roo's. So what does he tell me this morning, he wants to go and see if we can find more waters and feeders for all the chick when they grow up. But I can't go if I can't control myself. It's a good thing he came into the auction before it ended because there were little Sumatra's, Polish and so on and so on. He said I'm not allowed to collect chickens like I collect plants, that's a no no. LOL. I had the best time at the auction, the people there were wonderful and I felt right at home. I don't know anyone with chickens locally, except for you guys online. If you ever get the chance to got to a poultry auction go, it's a lot of fun.
This picture is the 2 little Old English Self Blue Bantams, the lighter color is the Rooster
New Chicks on the Block
Haahaahaa! Youve caught the Chicken auction fever!!!!! Poor baby! I am now on the wagon, for the C.A.A.,(Chicken Auction Anonymous)!!! I just could not go anymore! I wanted to bring home everything. So I know how you felt! I also have a DH that thinks I have lost my mind! But on the other hand he loves them too! He has the addiction to the miscellaneous auctions for junk and tools !! So we are a force to be reckoned with when we hit the auction barn!!! LOL!!!!!
I love your babies! You chose well and they are all so cute! The Seabrights are great!
You'll really enjoy those Barred Rocks when they start laying! Self Blue Bantams, Hmmm< I dont think Ive ever seen them in person, they are unusual looking . Long leggys, and pretty color!
Love the pics !!!
I wouldn't be able to handle the pressure of a poultry auction....I get very competitive..lol. I've never been for just poultry, but boy it would be fun and costly for me I just know it !!
I was trying to take pics this morning of the flock before I left for work but I find anymore if I stop for too long the turkeys (who are always under foot, cuz they follow me around talking to me...) use me for a perch. I turned the camera 'round and got a quick pic and I hate having my pic taken, but you can also tell by the pic I'm not real thrilled at big ole dirty turkey feet in my hair when I have to leave for work...lol
I'm gonna email the pic to my brother, he'll love it
Enjoy your new babies !!!!!!!!!

What beautiful birds I love your golden sebrights!
I guess I must be normal than, I started out wanting guineas because our new house is surround by a cedar/pine forest and field so its a ticks heaven, and then saw silkies, ok, they are great brooders so they could hatch my guineas, then I saw silver sebrights! OM they are so beautiful, I LOVE black and white chickens, then I needed some egg laying hens so I got marans, a tad unusual and then the hubby wanted turkeys for thanksgiving so now I am in chicken heaven!
They are so pretty darn cuties and you did well...
Tracey
Eufaula, you are so right, I think I might have to join your club, C.A.A.,(Chicken Auction Anonymous). You know E, I got a pair of Self Blue Bantams, soon there will be eggies to hatch. Let me know if you want any, and I also have a pair of Golden Seabrights, it's a lot of fun hatching eggies.
Lorak, I saw some Silver Seabrights at the auction, there were 8 in the box and they sold for $5.00 each so I passed on them, they were much older than the ones I bought, but they were so beautiful. I'll see if there's any tomorrow at the auction, that's a secret now.
Jab, I can honestly tell you that you would probably get into trouble, like me and Eufaula, who can resist a little beautiful chick, why cant we have a couple of each anyway.
My seabrights must not have been handled much, they are very skiddish, but the self blues are very friendly.

Yes, I agree, Thank God for tomorrow. I love your bright Brahma girls they are so cute. Next year we should all have lots of eggies to swap, won't that be fun.
I'm leaving now to go to my sisters for lunch, then off to the auction, DH already said something stupid, but I just brushed it off. I can't wait. He love my chickens as much as I do. LOL. I can spend hours looking at all the chickens and other animals, there is a lot to see.
OH MY

you should have stayed for the polish and sumatras
we could have exchanged eggs!!!!
Love the lacing on the seabrights
I don't really buy too many chickens at the auctionsanymore ...its the other stuff...
Peacocks...swans.....the big ticket items ........its a sickness
I was very good at the auction. I saw a box of Silver Seabrights, and they were so cute. I didn't say anything to DH and continued to look. He came upon the chicks and said did you see these silver seabrights and I said yes I did. He said there are only 4 in this box, 2 pair. I said I know I read that, LOL. I said I wonder what they will go for, he said well you paid $1.00 each last week. Does that mean I can bid on this box, they are so cute. He said yes, but don't pay more than $4.00 per chick, so I agreed. Well he was outside at the other auction and I was alone once again. Here comes the Silver Seabrights, and then the auctioner added another box that had Golden Seabrights, 2 pair. He said the auction was for either box or you could buy both. Well some crazy lady bid the auction up to $9.00 per chick, ouch. She only bought the Goldens, so he asked me if I wanted the other box for $9 and I declined, so up for auction the Silvers went again, and I won them for $7.00 each, that was $3.00 more per chick than I had planned on paying for them but I was happy. I sat for a while because I was thinking of a way to tell DH that I won but spent more than our planned $4 per chick. I had to leave that auction, I would have gotten into a lot of trouble there by myself. I found DH and he said you paid $7.00 per chick and I almost hit the floor, he told me he had to come and see what was being auctioned off because he had time before something he wanted was going to be auctioned off. He watched me bid on those birds and was happy I declined at the $9 offer, but $7 was more than he wanted to spend. We laughed and he said I knew you were going to get them chicks. We had a wonderful time at the auction. So now I am the proud owner of the 4 Silver Seabrights, 2 pair. I'll get pictures this afternoon. They are so cute.
There were so many beautiful birds at this auction, I have never seen Emu's before, there were 2 cute chicks that sold for $65.00 each, and a little white hedgehog it went for $40 wow, and a baby dear, can't remember what they called it, but its supposed to be one that grows large antlers, it sold for $165. All the chicks went high yesterday, the week before they couldn't get more than $3, and most went for $1.00 per chick, but yesterday they all went high, so that was good for me. Kept me from buying.
I didn't see any peacock chicks this week but last week there were several and they sold for anywhere from $30 on up, but you had to buy a pair. There were several people who were bidding. I guess a lot of people want them. I wish I had enough property to have some peacocks, LOL. No swans yet, but a lot of ducks, and they went high yesterday, $6 on up, and last week they couldn't get a $1 for them. Next year I'll see about getting some Sumatras and Polish. LOL.
Cathy
Cathy, Thank you for calling me and I will call you Saturday to let you know what hatched and pics too...
