Carnosa flowers - lavender?

Medford, NJ

I have what I believe is a carnosa, I got cuttings from a very old plant last year....of course I already have 2 of the plain green variety, but even amoung carnosas there are subtle differences, one of mine has rounder paler leaves, another darker longer leaves, you get my meaning, they are not all the same. And of course when I see a hoya I don't have, I have to have it, even if I already DO have it - and yes, even if it is JUST a carnosa....I know you guys understand.

Both of my plain green carnosas flower in that pale almost white pink, one is a little deeper in color but they are both what you would call pale pink. I took the cuttings from this lady's plant because the leaves were different than my other two, longer and flatter and the new growth is thin narrow leaves in a very pretty rust color. The vine color is dark too, especially new growth. I was expecting it to have the typical pale pink flowers. When it got it's first peduncle last month, I noticed that the individual stems on the peduncle were a vivid burgundy, and so was each unopened bud - my other carnosas have brownish flower stems, brownish buds....still, I thought nothing of it until today, when the buds finally opened - the flowers are lavender! It is on the pink side, but definately lavender. And not pale like the typical carnosa flower.

Do carnosas flower in lavender? I don't believe I have ever seen even a photo of one this color. I am very excited about this ( believe me, my life is dull, it don't take much!! ) and glad too, because it justifys my having to have yet another plain green carnosa!!

I tried to take a picture, but the flash just washed out the color, so there was no point.

The description of the leaves sounds like they could be pubicalyx leaves, ie. flatter and narrower. Perhaps it's a pubicalyx 'Royal Hawaiian Purple" if the flowers are lavender. Some of the pictures of the flowers of this one that I've seen look quite lavender.

Bhavana34, I have one that is blooming for the first time & it's peduncle is burgandy also. It hasn't opened up yet & is still pretty small. I went & took a picture, but like you said, it washes it out a little bit.

Here is another picture. I didn't realize that I needed to dust this poor plant until I looked at this picture. I'd better get busy on that..

I have what I'm sure is this same carnosa, and it was sold as Hoya "Rubra" at Home Depot about seven years ago. Whether or not this is a correct ID for this carnosa I do not know. It was an EA plant, and I know that they are notorious for bad IDs. My plants have the exact silver splotches on the leaves and an identicle peduncle and flower buds of yours. The flowers are definitely a lavender color. If this is not carnosa "Rubra," I would like to know the correct ID so that I can correct mine.

That burgundy peduncle looks pretty much like mine did, taking camera flash into consideration. Major difference between that peduncle and the brownish ones on my other carnosas. Maybe someone with a few of the green carnosa variety will chime in and tell us that the burgundy is common to some carnosas....

Hoya 24, yours is not the variegated one but is the solid green, right? Thats interesting - EA now calls their variegated carnosa (Krimson Princess) "Rubra" which is, by the way, the right name for that variety. Problem with EA is, they not only mislabel on their tags, they put the wrong tags on the wrong plants too...But I have never heard of a plain green carnosa being called Rubra.

I know this hoya I am have came from a much older plant, from way before EA started selling. Sandy, I was thinking it could possibly be a pubicalyx too, especially because of the leaves, but the plant has some "carnosa-ish" looking leaves as well, maybe it is a cross? I have not seen too many pubicalyx in person, the only one I own is Pink Silver.

There are so many cv's floating around out there, it is really hard to tell. I like the lavender flowers though, they are very pretty and very obviously lavender, especially when placed next to the typical carnosa pink flowers.

Can you take a photo of the flower????

yes, I can but the color isn't coming out at all, just washed out looking, and I can't move the plant outside where I won't need flash.
