This link was posted in the Southwest Gardening Forum. I haven't checked for verification of this, but thought it was pretty interesting to see these photos.
I thought the tropical folks would be interested in seeing this.

From the site:
August 2006, the yacht 'Maiken' is travelling in the south Pacific when they came across a weird sight...
It was sand in the water, and floating ON TOP of the waves...
And, while they were watching...
A brand new island formed...
I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did.
Janet
A new island is formed
The fella that posted the link in the other thread was sweet enough to come back and post this link to Snopes. I thought the additional information in the snopes article was also very interesting about the island. Just thought I'd share that as well.

Neat!! That would have been really interesting to see.
Janet, thank you for posting this! I had heard rumors, but seeing the pictures is sooo cool! Can you imagine seeing that?!?! Wow!
You folks on the underwatergardenthread were the first ones I thought of when I saw it. I was so hoping you'd see it and perhaps know something else about it. :-) So whathaveyaheard???? Come on, spill the beans here Shari! HAHAHAHA
Janet
I didn't notice if they gave coordinates on it. Hmmmmm I wonder laterally and longitudinally(are those really words cuz they sure were strange to type) how close you all are to it?
From what I gathered - its not really near us....probably around 2000 miles or so away. BUT....since we are pretty much that far away and more from say Hawaii - then I guess its closer to us than to you! Anyway, I had heard that there was a new island "found" at the end of last year, then we didn't hear any more....sort of forgot about it - like it was just a hoax or something...lo and behold - Janet comes through with good intel....way to go, girl!
HAHAHAHA Definitely closer to you than to me.
I thought the photos that were taken were fantastic "time lapse" (for lack of a better word). What a heckuvan adventure!!!
Janet
As excited as I get when we are out on a boat and we get visited by a pod of dolphin (Wow, Oooh, Look,,, Gee, gosh , AAAAhhhhh) I can imagine that if I had had the incredible opportunity of seeing that, you could have just rented my room at the OldsFartsHome, and planted me inside. Those people are some of the luckiest I have ever seen....to see the birth of an island right in front of you....man'o'man.....
The cool thing is that they had a wonderful camera with them and recorded it as it was happening! And then, to top it all off, they shared it with US!!!!
I agree that they are some extremely lucky folks!
Janet
Everyone here is saying that they should have claimed it as theirs! Now THAT would be cool!
Oh Heck Yeah! HAHAHAHAHA
Let's see, If I had claimed it, I probably would have called it Isle de Draco, or something dragonish ... DH would probably have just called it ScottsIsle or something....other ideas?
Darn, so other people have already set their sights on claiming it....shoot....there went my getaway from the in-laws!
LOL - Lots of islands out here.......!
If I could teleport myself, it would be the perfect day...lol
Beam me up Scotty!
When we sailed thru Tonga ina bout 1997, we saw the steam plumes coming from that formation....it sounds like the same area where there is an island that comes up and goes down a lot...over years. That whole area is really neat... In another area some yachties saw an island created as well...pretty wierd.
Very wierd! So maybe this wasn't really a new island, just a bipolar one? Can't decide if its up or down? That is toooo strange! I envy you seeing it though! someday I hope to as well.
That is so awesome! But I think I'll wait to visit it until it develops some topsoil and at least one palm tree.
You may have a very long wait. lol
That's ok, it'll take me that long to save up to pay for the boat to get me there ;~)
Thanks for showing us that.Enjoyed!!
