Broccoli

Brimfield, MA(Zone 5a)

Hi,

Is it okay if my broccoli is turning into yellow flowers?

THanks!

On broccoli, you need to eat the flower buds, BEFORE they open. Quality is on a downhill slide when a bud opens. Unless you wish to save seeds, it is not a good thing. It means you waited too long to pick it. If it is not too far along you can cut the seeding heads off and hope that sideshoots develop.

Sigh, I'm afraid Farmerdill is right, as usual :(. The only benefit to having it turn to flowers for me, was that my chickens LOVED them....

Darn. I just noticed 2 yellow flowers on one of the heads. I guess I'll have go pick them out today. So are they a cool weather crop??

DEFINITELY a cool weather crop. I let mine flower like crazy and the bees LOVED them. It was at a time I needed a little color going in the garden and it was just right.
