Bigleaf Hydrangea, French Hydrangea, Mophead 'Leuchtfeuer' (Hydrangea macrophyll

Albany, NY(Zone 5a)

i bought one of these today! can't wait to get it in the dirt! i'm zone 5b so i'm a little nervous, it's my first Hydrangea, but it was only $5 so if it doesn't work out it was a learning experience!

all the best with your first Hydrangea, I have never gardened in Zone 5b, so if it does well you may want lots more. lol

i'm already planning many more! Hydrangeas that is... tell me, what sort of soil have you had such great color with? this is how i bought it, it seems a little pale for all the pictures i've found of leuchtfeuer

where it grows it's acid, that photo is very late in the season and slightly faded. I do have another pic that looks more like yours.

I transplanted it to a larger pot today using half potting mix half peat moss; and after it seems to take root i'll be using an acidic fertilizer, and adding a coffee, and eggshell, pine needle compost. so hopefully it will do well. i'm getting conflicting reports on the color of this particular Hydrangea though, in highly acidic soil will this flower turn blue?

I would say it would turn lavender to blue. if it's in limey soil it will be more like your picture or this pic the photo I should have posted.

great! there's a lot of lime where i live! lol there is a quarry literally in my back yard! i'm not too concerned with changing the color, i just want a nice hardy Hydrangea. i've seen so many different colors of this cultivar that i'm on the edge of my seat here! i saw one picture that was bright scarlet red, and yellow even! better not hold my breath though, it's only just a little thing right now. but i'll be sure to update on the progress.

I will look forward to seeing what shade you get, please post the photos and add to plantfiles.
I love the fact that they can be lovely both ways.
