Baby Sunrose, Heartleaf Ice Plant 'Red Apple' (Aptenia cordifolia)
Hi i live in Arizona and am having a hard time finding this plant to buy, do you have any suggestions on where to buy it?
Here, they sell it by the flat for groundcover. I can send you some cuttings in exchange for postage. If you're interested, send me a D-mail.
Hi,
I live in Sierra Vista, AZ and bought two plants at a local nursery, called Nick's Nursery. Unfortunately, they are a family nursery, and do not have a website, (or even business cards). However, if we aren't too far from where you live, I can get their phone number for you and perhaps you can call them and come visit their nursery, if you want. They called this "Hearts and Flowers" ice plant. But after searching on Dave's Garden and Bloom IQ, (first on Bloom IQ), I found what the nursery called the plant and what it actually is. My plants, Sun Rose plants, like the ones shown in these pictures are in the family of Ice plants, but the leaves are broader and not spiked. Both plants, the ice plants, (with different latin names) and Sun Rose plants, "Aptenia cordifolia" are two different plants. But, both are very pretty.
If you check your local nurseries, I would use the latin term, "Aptenia cordifolia" when asking or ask for "Sun Rose" or "Red Apple." Otherwise you might find you are being told about the actual Ice plants, which have leaves that are spiked, similar to moss rose plants, (perhaps a little bigger. I haven't seen an ice plant, but pictures I've seen show spiked leaves).
If you go to the site: http://bloomiq.com and type in "Ice Plant" you will see that the Ice plants listed have spiked leaves and are not like the leaves of the plant you are looking for. (Unless you want an ice plant, that is). Bloom IQ lists the common name of the plant you are looking for as "Sun Rose" or the latin name: "Aptenia cordifolia." Sometimes different nurseries will use different names for one plant. Just to confuse everyone! The "Ice Plants" have more spiked leaves, (similaunlike the leaves of the plants you see on Dave's Garden for "Aptenia cordifolia." I don't know if you know this difference, (maybe you do) but I am very glad I checked Dave's Garden and Bloom IQ before shopping for this plant or any plant/tree.
You might want to check out your local Lowes, too. Don't go "on-line" to their website, however, it doesn't do your local store's garden center justice. They have lots of plants for our areas. I was surprised how great the plants are, great sizes and less expensive than the Internet nurseries. I used to shop via Internet, (especially since I'm home bound), thinking it was cheaper than local places. But, after my caretaker's been looking at Lowes and a local nursery, (a little nursery), I've now found that I get better prices and great plants! Much bigger than ones from Internet nurseries, too!
However, if you still don't find any locally, then just check out the nurseries listed here in "Dave's Garden" and see which nurseries carry these plants. However, if you're going to shop on the Internet, STAY AWAY FROM "Burgess Seed Company", if you want to get live plants, not dead ones, with no hassles! I would use the latin name, "Aptenia" or the common name, "Sun Rose" in the Internet nursery search box, just to make sure you don't get the ice plants and not the "Sun Rose" or "Aptenia cordifolia."
Good luck!
My second post to "heglieta":
Hi!
I did a little research, on the Internet, to find a place where you can buy the"Sun Rose" or "Aptenia cordifolia," for you.
My search lead me to this site, which looks like they have anything you can't find elsewhere:
http://glasshouseworks.com/succ-a.html
which a page that takes you directly to the place where you'll find the "Aptenia cordifolia", but you have to go all the way down the page
to find it, because they list the many succulents alphabetically, on that page, in the "A's". Boy, they have a lot of succulents and so much more "hard to find" plants!
Anyway, I've copied and pasted this information off the page:
"60195 APTENIA LANCIFOLIA AIZ TGHCGH - PRICE: $ 4.75
Succulent "Ice Plant" mat with many rose red rayed blossoms. Famous as "Hearts & Flowers" always popular in summer outdoor plantings of tubs, urns, and windowboxes." (However it is also listed as a ground cover on the "Internet" and at our little, local nursery.
This "Glass House Works" company is in Ohio, but I thought you would like to go to this site, if all else fails. I did not look to see what size plant you will get for their price, you'll have to search around the site to find what size plants they ship. I just wanted to get this info to you, quickly and didn't take the time to see the sizes. There is so much to see on this site! If nothing else, I'll go there to find something I can't find anywhere else.
Notice how they also list the plant as "Hearts & Flowers" an "Ice Plant!" Confusing, isn't it? But, on "Bloom IQ" they show it
separately as the "Aptenia cordifolia" or "Sun Rose", as all the Ice plants they list have different latin names. However, if you "Google" "Aptenia cordifolia," you will find this information under "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia":
"Aptenia cordifolia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Aptenia cordifolia is a species of succulent plant in the iceplant family known by the common names heartleaf iceplant and baby sun rose. ..."
So, I stand corrected. It isn't exactly like the Ice plants but the "Baby Sun Rose" (or just "Sun Rose"), is a species of the succulent plants, "in the iceplant family." This makes me very confused, but still, I will use the latin name, "Aptenia cordifolia" or "Sun Rose" to make sure you get the plant you see in all the pictures here.
I promise you, there will be no long posts again! :>{
Since you are in AZ, perhaps you would like to communicate about plants for AZ, with me. If so, feel free to D-mail me, since
I like to come here instead of going to my regular email address.
Good luck in your search...
Marianne
