gorgeous!

Very nice! You should add it's pic to the terrarium forum ...we could sure use your beautiful pic to encourage more posting there!

I have one I put in a big cookie jar & I'm waiting on the blooms to open.
Mine seems to be very happy.

That is truly gorgeous Gail! I've got 2 huge cookie jars from Wal-mart and I think buying some new episcias for them will put them both to very good use. Better episicas than cookies!! I'm not sure, though, what kind of medium will work best. Soil/perlite or spaghum. I have a lot of trouble keeping spagh moist- it dries so dang fast! What do you all think?

Gail, that's just beautiful!! I've got to start looking for some more neat little containers to use as terrariums!

GrowHappy, nice to see you here! Clearly spaghnum works nicely for Episcias! LOL For me, I won't use straight spagh., though. It takes a little more work than I have the time or energy for. I'll use a potting mix with perlite and vermiculite, with a bottom layer of perlite for drainage, most likely. I might try one in a smaller container in only spagh, just to see how it would do. If it's in a closed container, it might not dry out so fast. Worth a shot, anyway... ;o)

Confession time, ladies....................I didn't grow that one............I bought it like that in Boerne, Texas at an AV nursery.............I am not going to attempt to grow in spaghnum moss like he does.........he also grows his streps in SM.....I am going to try putting perlite in the bottom of one of these containers (he sold me some) then add my regular light and fluffy AV mix with lots of perlite in it......

I just received a lot of light variegated episcias and they need to have a top at all times ......

Back to work (or at least in a little while)

Drooling . Just gorgeous. Which nursery Gail ? I go to Borne for Bike races there.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok, Patti, the owner's name is ken Froeboese and he is currrently president of the San Antonio av society......His nursery is called Hill Country African Violets and Nursery...............he keeps a lot under gro-lights in his office behind the check out counter and it is open to the public...just don't miss it...........

I am guessing it is about 2 miles south of Boerne on I 10 going to San Antonio.....get off at exit#543 (Cascade/Beorne Stage RD) You will see the the sign and exit...........then turn back to the north on two-way access road. Take the first left on private lane to the house on the left.

It sounds complicated but is very easy because you can see the sign of his nursery on I 10........

Thank You Gail. I will have to check this place when I go back there. Patti

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Very nice, Gail! And my, it does put out big leaves that way! Can't wait to see photos of it in bloom!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just carefully looked at it.......it has a mix of soil on the bottom of the moss..................when I just did all mine, I put perlite on the bottom and it probably wasn't necessary!!!! BA HUMBUG!!!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

When I put this 'Ember Lace' in a terrarium, I made a "nest" of the LFS, then put a small amount of mix in the center, hence potting up the little plant. I then covered the top of the mix with more LFS.

This baby has really taken off with my TLC!

'Ember Lace' is really pretty .... love that pink variegation!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Me too! I just hope it stays true... I've heard it's not uncommon for it to revert back to all green.

North Augusta, ON

Ackkkk...don't say that, I just ordered me one of those.......

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Don't feel bad... I went into a compulsive "I'VE GOTTA HAVE IT!!!" bidding war on eBay when I saw it for the first time.

But... I still think she's pretty, and so far, every leaf has pink in it.

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

You've done good, Rose! You should be the proud plant mama. 'Ember Lace' is certainly a beauty to behold. I think I may try several small terr. like yours, nesting the LFS and then placing some well-aerated soil mix down in the middle. The LFS should provide sufficient humidity if kept moist, yes? Do you cover yours with saran wrap?

WOW,How very pretty Gail! Love the pinks.Whats it name Gail?
WOW to yours also Karen! Very different.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

The expert in Boerne who is president of AV society in San Antonio, told me that all light variegated episcias should always be grown under cover...............saran wrap or those corsage containers.....the darker ones benefit from high moisture in the beginning..............then can take off on their own without so much humidity.................

You can do it in a variety of ways, GH............on my corsage boxes I did today, I put a little perlite on the bottom and then used a potting mix on top of that...............the top is closed so I don't much think it makes much difference how one accomplishes the same thing....

I have some giant bowls which have nothing in the bottom but an inch of mix....perlite and av soil-less together............keep saran on the top and they are sooooooooooo big, I need to start all new ones....

Episcias also love the 4" pan pot things.....let me show you a picture of some I did today in these particular pots....very shallow pots.....

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

i cut the main stem on some old ones and started over rooting in these 4" shallow pans....they don't need to be covered up as they are not light in color..

oooooooooo....you have one with a yellow flower!!!!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

These were started in 3" pots and are well rooted by now....haven't decided when I am going to be ready to try a bulb pan that is 6"...

I have several that bloom yellow.....some of them that bloom yellow are kinda scraggly foliage...........but Tropical Topaz in the first big bowl that you saw....has the prettiest yellow blooms in the world....the foliage is a lime green...

Jan, I think you ask the name of the first picture which would be 'Cleopatra'

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

GH... I have not covered the 'Ember Lace'. I don't think I will be able to, as it is already sticking it's head up over the edge. I think the LFS provides the added moisture it needs anyway.

Wow! All these Episcias are just something to behold! I'm loving all these pictures! The ones with pink in the leaves are just amazing! :o) Those big bowls are great as terrariums.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I get them at Hobby Lobby for 8.00

Great! There's a Hobby Lobby close to us! :o)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

the best buy they have is a small one with fluted edges for 85 cents......the middle size is 5.00...........someone told me that I need to watch for the sales............you know like their picture frames are half price every other week.............I simply asked them last time when I paid full price to tell me when they go on sale.....the girl was a clerk and didn't know...........always go to the manager of a dept. and tell her you would like to place an order............give it to her and tell her you don't want the order until they go on sale at 1/2 price............they will do that!!!

(Zone 1)

Never heard of Hobby Lobby .... wish we had one!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)
