My soybean plants have been doing very well so far, but the past couple of days the lower leaves are starting to yellow on the outer edges and following in on the veins of the leaf. I spent forever on google trying to diagnose what the heck the problem is, and I saw a picture of soybean leaves with a magnesium deficiency which looks EXACTLY like my plant. I read that epsom salt can correct the problem (seemed to be the only thing that wouldn't change the ph?), but I don't know how to apply or how much to use. I wanted to ask here first so I don't end up burning my plants.
I currently have 4 soybean plants that are about 3 1/2 feet tall, flowering and starting to set beans, none full enough to pick yet. What would be the best method of application, and how much?
Thanks a bunch, I am so glad I joined this website :)
Epsom Salt question.
I beleive it is 2 Tablespoons to a gallon of water. I put it on my plants and they loved it.It even says on the front of the Epson salts for plants and veges. You can buy it in the drugstore, walmart etc. Deanna
At W/M make sure you get it in the pharmacy and not the garden section -- it's the same thing, but cheaper! Don't you just love marketing?
You can sprinkle it around the base of the plants and either work or water it in, or make a solution as deanna8 suggested and water the plants with it. It's miraculous.
And welcome to the site! You'll have a lot of fun.
I didn't know they even sold epsom salts in a garden center, lol, I've always bought it from the pharmacy section to soak in. I just haven't had any in a while, and mush admit that I never read the back of the package. I felt like an idiot when I bought some today and it said right on the back how much to use with plants.
And thank you brigidlily, I enjoy this site very much :)
Welcome from SC, kalika !! You will love this site and find very well informed gardeners who give excellent advise.
I use Epson Salts for my veggies, especially tomatoes. It corrects blossom end rot which is a calcium deficiency.
The farmers here grow soybeans which is a big cash crop. What do you do with them?
Just a curious gardener !!!

I love, love, LOVE edamame, so I wanted to grow a few plants :)
I simply boil them in water for a few minutes, add a dash of salt when they come out, and eat the beans right out of the pod. They are one of my all-time favorite veggies.
About the calcium thing, I also have some calcium carbonite powder I was thinking about adding to the plants, to help sweeten the soil a bit. Seeing as how all my plants are in containers, would it take too long to have an effect? My potting mix is becoming more acidic, and I would like to prevent it from becoming a problem.
Thank you all for being so friendly, I had browsed a few forums before joining this one, and I feel that I made the right choice!
