I bought a variegated amorphophallus last year from eBay. It was sinfully $$ for a tiny bulb. Well the good news is I haven't rotted it. But it has been in its little pot for months and not a sign of growth.
Should I keep it totally dry?
Should I cover it up again with soil?
Should I have it in the shade or sun?
Should I bag it for humidity? Here is dry and on the cool side. Day temps inthe 70s, night temps inthe 50s.
Should I kick my big butt for buying it in the first place?
It is in the middle of the pot peeking thru.
I need some serious help!
Hope someone cames along to help you, Kell. I have no idea what it needs.
Kell, I'm certainly no expert but mine came up. LOL
I had one I had stored since fall and four that I got new in the co-op. The four newer ones came up quicker than the other but it turns out the one I had was a different type. I potted them in Promix and stuck them in the greenhouse. I gave them regular water until they came up but it was hot so I figured it was safe. They all popped up when days were in the 90s and nights were in the 50-60s. I left the pots in the protected sunlight until they came up then shaded them some.
the only variegated amorphohpallus i've seen on ebay were variegated konjac, and you were right when saying they were expensive... i wish i had one! anyways, if that is what you bought it shoud be fine to just keep the bulb in the pot so that you see the top of the bulb, but don't water at all. since you have a cooler climate it probablly wont sprout until later in the season unless you have a green house. you'll now when to plant it when the sprout starts to emirge from the bulb and then little pimple like objects will form around the base of the sprout---those are the roots. amorphophallus root from the top first so you will want to make sure that at this point the whole bulb is covered, and now you can begin watering.
Ack! See! I told you I was no expert. I guess you better send it to Ohio where water is sparse and temps are high. I'll send it back when it sprouts. LOL
I NOT an expert, either, but I agree with you Badseed, it's just a temp thing, I'm in zone 5 and I'm just now potting my bulbs up. I have a couple in pots but, mostly I just store them "bare" over-winter on a shelf in the basement. They like very dry when not growing. I had one planted directly in the ground 3 years ago. I dug it for winter that year and still this year I have about 9 or 10 volunteers where it was planted...
I feel once they start nubbing in the spring, they are ready for moisture and the warmer the better. Every year though, I'm anxious to see the nubs and I ALWAYS think it's not as soon as I'd like. I added couple new ones this year, one has a pink edge on the leaf....they are undemanding and easy to store in winter, so unique. As with everything, have patience... I'd cover it too, Kell and try to get additional heat to it if possible...... or........ I could grow it for you! No problem, I'd send pics weekly an everything... ;)-B I'd like to see the leaves once they emerge, how cool!
