Florist Gloxinia

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I found some Gloxinias At HD, but I was leary about buying them due to their condtions. The leaves are wilted, but not brown. It has bloomed out. . They want full price I think $4.97 . I know it not a lot ,but if the plant isn't going to make it I don't wasnt to waste my money on it. Is this plant worth buying.TIA, Patti

Patti: Knowing me, I would probably have bought at least one! I have three Gloxinia's that I got about four years ago ... I thought they had died! They were just brown stumps in pots out in my Florida room and all of a sudden I noticed a bit of green coming from those stumps. I started watering them and feeding them with my AV food which I ran out of and am now using VF-11 until my order comes in with the AV fertilizer. Anyway, they aren't blooming yet, but are looking pretty darn good. So, you should maybe give them a try. I'm not sure, but I think I remember someone posting on this forum about Gloxinia's dying back, but that the rhizome would still be okay and resprout. I'm assuming that's what happened with mine. At least I think it was the Gloxinia they were talking about, I may be wrong .... if I don't write something down, I never remember! LOL.

I also think that they don't like heat at all.......remember I know nothing, but could they be dormant in the heat until the cool weather rolls around or you grow them inside....Weatherford Farms in Houston (out in Missouri City) grows the best ones!! i think it is wholesale only though....you ought to get you a state tax permit............the minimum is only 25.00 and the prices are fantastic wholesale..

(Zone 1)

I thought you had to own a business to get a tax permit to buy wholesale? I just googled Weatherford and it said they have a website coming soon. Sounds like my kind of place ... Huge! I look forward to the website, but it is wholesale only.

Oh, back to Gloxinia's .... I have a couple under the grow lights, maybe I should get them to a cooler location? And, one out in my Florida room that's really hot and humid! I better get it into air conditioning, huh? Thanks for that info Gail .... I had no idea they preferred cooler temps!

Lin, I am just guessing that they react like an av would if you put it on your porch in the summer heat....

I used to always have a sales state number......gets you to wonderful places, Lin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just food for thought... they do go dormant and you could possible retart the tuber again in about 90 days or so. They are "like" big sinningias in that they have a kinda flat tuber .You don't find just the tuber for sale very often in the stores, just the plants. If you look at any of the online ordering places for tubers the shipping alone would be that much,so it all depends on how important the plant is to you.

Lin , I ran back to HD and I bought two gloxinias. My hubby asked what you have there dear? I told him my DG friend Lin told me to buy them,so I did. LOL
Thanks Lin.

Oh Yeah, Patti ..... blame it on me! LOL. But, you are welcome! $4.97 was a great price! I must get out to Home Depot tomorrow! Haven't been there in awhile ... and I think I need something. :)

You will have to post pic's of your new babies when you get them revived and looking presentable!

Hope your Dear Hubby realizes we here in this Garden are all "Enablers"!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

"Enablers" is the understatement of the year!!!!!!

Shame on you Lin. I have a goldlfish plant in the garage he doesn't know about yet. LOL

I watered the poor gloxinias, and so far one is bouncing back and the other is still sick looking. I will post a pic tomorrow.

Thanks Lottie for the great info. I had a couple of gloxinias years ago, and I threw them out thinking they were dead when they were only going dorment. :O(

I have a few goldfish plants, small ones that are out on my deck in a bright location .... they seem to like it better out there than inside the house for some reason! One had blooms opening a couple of weeks ago, haven't looked at them recently.

Yep .... I always would buy the beautiful Glox's when in full bloom and as soon as they "died" I would throw them out, not knowing they went dormant! I am so glad I read that on this forum. Now, I know not to just pitch something cause it looks dead ... it may just be "taking a nap"!

Well what a difference a day makes and some water. The first is white blooms with purple spots around the center . I have a new camera, and I am still trying to figure out how to use it. This one cost 7dollars and some odd cents.

Here is the smaller one . It cost me $3.49, but it was marked $4.97. You would not believe how sick they looked yesterday. I am thinking about going back and getting more. This one is white with pink edges.

Lovely Purchases, Patti .... I would love to find a white one like that ... really pretty! Keep posting those pic's. Let us know if you get more! Great Prices on those beauties!

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Those are wonderful! You did great..I would have bought them, too!

Did you know you can grow babies from them like the strep leaves??
You can stick a leaf in soil like we do AV's and you can also split the leave down the middle, discard the vein and plant it lengthwise in your choice of soil mixture. The babies will grow at the vein points along the leaf...too cool!
You should give it a try!

Way to go Patti,

MsC

(Zone 1)

Oh, Thank You MsC for that information! I had no idea you could propagate these like AV's! I've got to give that a try ... oooh, I'm so excited ... more plant babies!

Thanks Lin and Lottie.
Lottie, Do you cut back the old bloom stem once they are finish blooming?

Patti... Just following your thread about the gloxinias. You can see my recent and ongoing thread about mine here... http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/726622/

When the flowers fade on mine, I have been cutting them off, stem and all... but that's just me. There are many here who like to propagate by seeds, and would probably try to pollinate their flowers and get seed pods off them.

Yours are very pretty! I hope you enjoy them as much as I have mine.

Take care... Karen

I'm sorry Patti...

I was just looking back over my thread, and I now see where you had already been there! Wasn't trying to shove mine down your throat... sorry 'bout that!

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

you can propagate bloom stems too! (I have not tried this yet myself....)

Karen I can look at your beautiful Gloxinia all day, and your pretty kittty too.

Key, Thanks for the info. I am going to try to root them just to see if I can. What do I have to lose.
Patti

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

drop an aspirin in the water! (is what they tell me. helps things root faster.)

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Wow, Key! That's really interesting! I simply do not have the space right now though.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Keyring, you are just our expert source of "how to"........

Patti, so glad you went back...........it looks like they can still grow a lot and the blooms are wonderful....
