I'm thinking it's a moth, but what do I know? I may have given you a begonia thinking it was coral bells. LOL I owe you the real thing at the next ru by the way.

If your pool lights were on, they may have attracted him. I'm glad you rescued him, Chris. Certainly a pretty colored one and a nice picture too!

LOL, I came home with so many things from the roundup. I didnt keep everything seperate and labeled, so I am not sure who gave me what. I was wondering where the extra begonia came from. It is doing beautiful by the way. :)

I'm thinking one of the red underwings....maybe the Ilia Underwing moth. Very pretty!

I just recently found a similar moth. When I put the pic on the bug ID forum, it was ID'd as Catocala ilia.

Yes, I agree with Catocala ilia: http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/catilia.htm

It was very bright orange and the underneath side was very colorful also. Very pretty for a moth, but you wouldnt know it with the wings closed.
The pool made it very easy to get a decent photo. Are these photos worthy to put in bug files or is there enough in there of these moths?

Thanks for the ID,
chris

Chris - I would add that first photo to bug files. Very good clarity in the photo and shows all the details of the wings! Go for it! :-)
