confused... again....

Philomath, OR

I recently read on another forum that we should wrap the stems of our hoyas counter clockwise if we live in the north of the eqator and clockwise if living south of the equator.

Ok, so I'm looking at my plants and thinking that I have some of mine 'wraped the wrong way' as they are wraped clockwise. Then, I turn one plant around and from that side it's wraped counter clockwise.

See what I'm sayin'? I just turned all the plants wraped and growing the 'wrong way' around and now they are all growing the other direction.

Did I miss something?

The coriolus effect: confuses me. Look at the way your water drains down your sink....that is the way plants will grow around anything. I saw that post and think it was backwards...but then...what do I know????? I start mine going clockwise and they seem happy!!!! In fact...they go clockwise on their own... :>)

I have a very large H. chlorantha plant which by the way came from you Carol. The plant started out in a basket. I didn't liek teh way it wsa growign int eh baskete so I planted it in a pot with a giant hoop for it to grow around.

When I planted it I seperated teh vines equally to be wrapped from each side of the hoop. In other words I began wrapping one section of vines from the left side of the hoop moving towards the right side. I then began to wrap the vines from right to left.

This plant has been like this for a year now and is growing VERY well. No leaf drop no vine die off or anything. The only problems that I seem to have with both clones that i have of H. chlorantha is that they attract mites like a magnet so I keep them isolated from my other hoyas.

despite what some teachers may have told you, the coriolis effect does NOT affect water draining from toilets, sinks, or tubs. how can I make such a bold statement? because I am a science teacher, and I was told the same lore myself. while going over the coriolis effect in school (we were discussing ocean currents), I posed the question to the students over what would happen if you flushed a toilet ON the equator. well, I googled coriolis and discoved that my previous instruction was WRONG wrong wrong wrong. the coriolis effect only works on water/wind over days due to the earth's rotation....has no effect on quickly draining water.

as for hoyas and othere vines.....they'll grow best in the direction you'd rather them not go

I let mine grow the way they want to.

OK, may be I didn't explain myself very well...............

Take a plant that is wraped right to left. TURN the SAME plant around (180 degrees) and look at it again. NOW it is wraped left to right. See what I'm saying??? One plant viewed from 2 sides grows opposite directions.

I have plants growing both directions and they do fine as long as I wait until the stems are long enough to be heading up when bent and attached. That was a HUGE bit of info that Carol posted on. It has totaly changed how well my plants grow. (thanks Carol!)

After reading that post on another forum I thought maybe they should grow one direction. I supose that if you NEVER move a plant or turn it so the sun shines on the 'back side' of the plant you could do this. Anyway, I kinda answered my own question. It just can't matter which way you wrap your stems as long as they are long enough to be heading up again after they are bent.

Happy Birthday David! It's mine too only I have about 3 years on ya'! Enjoy yourself but not too much......LOL :~)

I just learned that tip about not clipping a stem that's growing downward. Good to know. But I don't usually clip my plants anyway until all the baby leaves on the new vine have grown enough. I just get worried that clipping them down will hold back growth.

Joanne, I completely understand what you're saying....it makes no sense! Especially if you're growing outside!! Then the vines are going clockwise if you're standing in front of it on one side, but counterclockwise if you're standing in front of it on the other side! Makes no sense. I just clip my plants where they seem to want to be...that's all.

Joanne I totally forgot that you had told me today was your birthday as well. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!! It's not only yours and mine but my dad's as well.

I spent most of my morning in Charleston,S.C. 1 1/2 hrs south of here. My mom as some of you already know was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago and had to go through chemo and radiation. The external stuff is finished and worked very well at decreasing the size of her tumor.

Today on my 40th birthday of all days, she had to go and have radiation implants put in which will require a 3 day stay in the hospital and then she goes back on the 3rd of July for another implant and 3 more days of internal radiation.

I didnt get any major details of the surgery today other than it went very well. Best I can make out is they implant 2 rods surgically and then attach something to those rods which releases a direct dose of radiation to the tumor itself.

She has to lay flat on her back with very little or no movement at all for 3 days,no one can be in the room at all for visitation and staff is only allowed for a total of 30 minutes in any given 24 hour period.

At the foot and head of the bed there is an interesting looking contraption made of 3 inch thick solid steel which is to prevent any radiation from penetating the walls and entering adjoining rooms or stairwells.

She's not overly thrilled about being in a strange place and having all of this stuff done and being left alone but it's not safe for anyone to be in the room until the treatment has been completed.

Okay so I got carried away and hijacked the thread!! Sorry!!! Anyway happy birthday again and I hope its a good one. I'm gonna try and make the most of whats left of mine!

Joanne, Gaiadisciple is quite right. Vines growing clock-wise or counter-clockwise according to whether they are north or south of the equator is an old wives tale. The (faulty) logic behind this myth attributes the difference in direction to the coriolis effect. The coriolis effect is seen when objects move north-south over the earth's surface. Because the earth is a sphere and rotates on a fixed axis, the region around the equator spins faster than the region around the poles. When very large objects (like weather systems) travel north-south, different parts of the system will speed up or slow down, according to how far from the equator they are. This can cause a circular or spiral direction. (Perhaps Gaiadisciple can explain that better.) This affects very large objects in a visible way, but not small ones. Water going down a drain or vines growing up a support are too small to be so drastically effected. The direction of their spin or growth is determined by sink, toilet, or bathtub shape in the instance of water, and by plant genetics, in the case of vines. Most vines seem to grow counter-clockwise, but most can also change direction sometimes. Here is a link to more information than anyone would actually want about the phenomenon in plant growth:

http://www.jcb.org/cgi/content/full/157/5/736

A vine that grows in a counterclockwise fashion is counterclockwise whatever direction you turn the plant in. Look at the growth tip and you will see. Turning the plant around does not change the appearance of the direction of growth.

OK...I concede misunderstanding. I just know all of mine are growing clockwise up the trees... No worries.
