Wanted - Che

Greensburg, PA

I'm looking for Che, seeds, seedlings, cuttings, suckers, small plants from successful zone 5 plants. I have 1 Variegated Fuki, multiple white alpine type running strawberries plants, skirrett plants, goji/wolfberry cuttings and a very few first year gooseberry plants (that are rather small yet). I have about 15 gooseberry and currant varieties that I am willing to send cuttings or custom start plants for shipment (as cuttings) this fall or (as plants) next year if you are trying to find a specific variety I might have.

I have a friend in NC who grafts it. I don't think it does well on its own roots here. I think he uses Maclura for rootstock--osage orange. He is a member of Southern Fruit Fellowship and NAFEX. I used to be. MY friend stays rather busy, but I would recommend joining NAFEX. It should be right up your alley. It can be purchased from a few sources or you may find someone in NAFEX to exchange with, I'm sure.

Sugarcane,

I have heard that che on its own roots suckers a lot and tends not to make as nice a tree as those grafted on osage. I'm willing to try either. Your information about NAFEX is much appreciated and I will check it out. Still also looking for some trades though.

I called my NC NAFEX/SSF friend last night and he had company so didn't talk long. He says he has male and female trees so he should have viable seed available later this year. He says Che will perform into zone 6. He has grown it for about 20 years or so that I know of. He lives at Mt. Olive, NC--not so far from Goldsboro, as I recall.

Thanks, Sugarcane. I'd like to obtain some seed this fall, if your friend is willing.
