I got this plant at a local nursery the other day. This nursery is very unorganized but offers a good variety of plants. I spotted this plant mixed in with lots of other annuals and it was labeled as an annual. I loved the little violet looking flowers on wirey stems and had to have it. I was going to plant it in the ground but put it in a pot instead hoping that I could over winter it. Is this a streptocarpus? Can it be grown as a houseplant? Thanks.
Is this a streptocarpus?
Is it this one? http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1859528
Hi staceysmom! That is a lovely Streptocarpella!
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/2114/index.html Streptocarpella has stems with leaves, whereas Streptocarpus has only leaves. Care is basically the same for the two. You can indeed grow it as a houseplant. It would enjoy being outside in the summer, and then you could bring it in when it begins to get cold. If you cut it back, the stems root very easily if kept moist, and the remaining plant will become bushier. You could have a very large hanging basket of it in a relatively short time. http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/1961/ Congratulations on such a nice purchase! :o)
Yes Gerris2 that is it!
RainGazer Thanks for the information. It reminded me of an African Violet when I saw it and had to purchase it and give it a try. I'm glad I didn't pass it up or plant it in the ground like I had intended. I'll have to give it a try at the hanging basket thing.
Thanks Ladies!
I found one around here at a nursery the other day..........about 10" across............they couldn't sell them, so they had them for 5.00 each................couldn't pass that one up.............now I just have to get it to bloom more...I have it out on the front porch............we will see if it can take our summers outside???
if you plant shopped as much as i do, there would have to be a bargain somewhere, Gerris2!!!!!! laffin....laffin....
I saw one at my local nursery too, I will have to go get it. Thanks for the idea.

Gessiegail, yuppers, that's my "problem" too. I make the rounds to all the local plant stores a couple times a week. Always tell the DH, "but it was such a bargain!" And the later it gets in the season, the more bargains there are!
Your blooms appear to be pink.....mine are lavender......or bluish lavender....
My biggest problem is that there is no DH in my household.................need some accountability!!!!!
Must be the lighting or the camera, they are lavender blooms.
Ladies, this has been great fun, but the big marshmellow named a bed is calling me to curl up and get lost in sleep.....see you tomorrow.....
