Heliconia rostrata

Naples, FL

What a joy it is to live in 10b!

This critter [the plant, I mean, not the bloom] has been three years in the making–one of those years being lost to Wila–but now I have scads of them and they are lovely. They are on the east side of a fence that goes north and south, and they are below two fairly large starfruit trees. So far, this bloom, which was the first, is 4 weeks old.

What a beauty? I tried growing it and another one here in Canada and they both died that summer. I probably should not have planted them into the ground!!

Nice. I have one that I keep potted. I'm just a little too cold for them to be in the ground here in 9b.

I love this plant. It has awesome blooms, but it's hard for me to get one to bloom with our short summers. I finally gave up. The red on your bloom is just gorgeous. Thanks for sharing your picture. Sure made my day.

Carter, I wanted to know if your potted plant ever flowered.

Thanks,
Charmaine

Nope. I've only had it a year, though, and it's fairly small at this point. I won't expect flowers for another year or two.
