Experience with damaged DVDs?

Hi folks-

I thought I was a good kid and backed up all of my digital photos and a few videos to a DVD. When my computer exploded (well, close enough!) I thought I could just transfer everything to my new PC from the DVD - but it has gotten scratched awfully in a recent move. Grrr.

I was able to get a few of the pics off - like 7 out of a few hundred, but no more. Web searches turn up software that says it can retrieve info, but I would think with a physical damage problem that they're unlikely to help.

Any info or advice is *greatly* appreciated, this is quite a loss for me. TIA!
