Yellowed Leaves

Schriever, LA(Zone 9a)

I hope someone can help me with this. My leaves are turning yellow and falling off. New leaves and older leaves. I am also having to spray daily with soap for whiteflies. Is this plant diseased or do I need to fertilize? This plant has not flowered yet this season. We have had horrible weather this year. It rains nearly every afternoon. This plant is the most affected. Two other younger ones are somewhat affected and one is not affected at all and is filled with buds. They are all in the same bed!

Early in the spring I added compost and manure along with a little Osmocote. Do I need to fertilize? If so, what do you all recommend?

Here are a couple of pictures. The whole plant:

This is a closer look at the leaves.

Just a wild guess, but maybe it's just too much moisture causing the yellowing. Maybe as the weather gets better, so will the leaves. I'm not an expert at all, but too much water can almost always cause trouble with plants.

Excess water is my thought too, yellowing leaves is a common first symptom, and if it's been raining that much lately that definitely could be it. If it stops raining and you get some nice warm sunny days hopefully it should improve things. The other possibility (although I think overwatering is more likely) is too much soap burning the leaves--if you're spraying stuff really frequently that can be hard on the plant, applying it from time to time is fine, but if you're really doing it every day that could be too much. Although the rain is probably washing it off, so I think it's less likely. You might consider buying some worm castings and putting those around the base of the plant, some people swear by that for getting rid of whiteflies.

I can guarantee you it's just the rain. We've been getting dumped on here like you, and mine have had a few yellow leaves and those eventually drop. But not to worry - as long as your plant seems to be blooming and you don't see any critters or evidence of critters (weird looking stuff other than leaf-yellowing) then you are pretty ok.

The Hidden Valley Hibiscus website gives a lot of information about leaf yellowing. Their website is at http://www.hiddenvalleyhibiscus.com/care/yellowleaves.htm.

Just sit back, relax, and watch your plants grow! Remember - don't water them when the ground is still wet from all of the rain we've been getting. :) Enjoy the rest of our summer!
