Need answer on copying problem

I have XP operating system. When I make a copy of a (example) .jpg graphic file to another file folder it will copy it to that file folder, but it will also make a copy (duplication) of the graphic in the original folder. (leaving me with 2 picture of the same file) Maybe I am doing it wrong. If I want to make a copy of several files, I will hold down the CTRL key and click on the files. I don't notice the duplication when I just want a copy of one file. What am I doing wrong?
