Have you tried the triple bulb method?

I was reading an article in Birds n' Blooms magazine about a woman who has a beautiful garden. She admitted to using rather unorthodox gardening methods, including planting too closely together. The interesting thing was that she described her method of bulb planting, and I'm trying to get my mind around how it works.

She digs one hole, and puts three bulbs in, right on top of one another. She puts the largest first, the second largest next, and the smallest on top. I'm trying to figure out how the bottom two grow around the bulbs above them without becoming deformed? I think it's an intriguing concept, but I wonder if any of you have tried it. Perhaps this is a commonly known method, and I'm just now catching up?

I've heard of this method being used for planting bulbs in containers, but never tried it. I suppose the shoot from the bulb on the bottom just finds its way past the obstruction, like it would if it encountered a stone in the soil above it. I'm not sure if it would work if you put a big bulb like Fritillaria imperialis at the bottom, because those guys come up like rockets and would probably just push the lighter bulbs out of the ground.

Hmmm...I may feel a little experiment coming on. I'l post my results-- if and when I try it.

Hi Lono- I've got a very small garden and am busily digging up my last years tulips to try to organize that space a bit better. Your question caught my eye- went surfing to see if anyone had actually tried it (besides a professional :) found the following:

If you try it yourself, please post pics- I'll bookmark this thread to see how they turned out.
Thanks! Julie

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to run across this idea! I'll let you know how my experiments turn out.

Oh, and the woman who did this wasn't a professional, she was just a self-taught individual who had a beautiful garden. I think they highlight certain readers of their magazine. Unfortunately, I left that mag at the doctor's office (despite the urgings of my mother to take them with me), and now I wish I'd listened to her and not been so polite!

Laugh, disobeying your mother! Shame on you ;)
I'll try it too, and post picture of the results next Spring.
