I have never tried poppies before but wow!! These are stunning and I think I will add a few more...
Poppy
Wow is right! I have a hard time getting poppies to grow so I will enjoy yours.Any words of wisdom for me?
throw out the seeds in Oct/Nov and forget you planted them!
That is why it is so silly! Maybe I am not choosing the right place. or they "know" I am watching...Will try again this November.
yep - just give up - dont even cover....
Bananna,
The first year most of the plants will bloom but are so small you don't notice them. After they bloom, and the seed pod forms and then turns brown, cut them and save the seed.
But whatever you do, DON'T pull up the stalks of the old plant. Cut them off at ground level, they will return next year even larger.
I was sorry I was not successful with the poppies , larkspur or daisies . I saw them germinate but then were gone. The milkweed is looking good! Do you throw them in a grassy area?
I grew some in little pots, then transplanted them into the ground...still waiting for flowers :( The ones at Mercer Arboretum already bloomed. Will mine really come back next year? If they never bloomed to make the seed?
nope I just added them to my garden spot I wanted them in...
umm I do the same thing with larksspurs but they go everywhere after that first year - just be ready
daisy I have never gotten seed to take, what type are you wanting? I have shasta and Ox-eye both do ok here and both I started with plants.
Larkspur reseeds like crazy if you don't have mulch. I had one large plant that came up in the edge of a flower bed near my flagstone pond area. I harvested seed right and left, but still had about 100+ plants that came up in the sand/gravel, to take to a swap and share.
from those she shared I now have several 100 that bloomed this year... and the seed oh my it went everywhere from the ones I did not get I am sure. But I like them in the early spring garden.
