Help.....I'm having a bean problem

Libby, MT(Zone 4b)

My bush and pole beans have little holes in the leaves and some leaves are almost gone. I think it is leaf beatle. I have never had a problem like this with beans.

If I pinch the holy leaves off, will bean continue to grow and produce more leaves? Or do I need to replant? DM

You need to use a spray to kill the beetles that are eating your leaves. Ortho has good products just don't use a systemic formula when spraying edible foods.

what is systemic formula? I have never sprayed anything before. Thanks

Systemic means it penetrates into the plants system and stays there for a long period of time including in the fruit. Make certain that you read the labels of everything you buy and don't ever take the word of the store clerk. Remember they are not knowledgeable about their products. Their job is to sell! My friends have purchased many items from all different nurseries only to discover they have the wrong product. Many years ago when I was a novice I purchased four indeterminate tomato seedlings and was told I could plant all four in a sixteen inch pot? Obviously the individual who was in charge of the nursery department did not know what he was talking about.
Unless you purchase from a nursery farm and speak with the man that does the growing, be very careful taking advice from non-gardeners. Do a lot of reading and start with Dr Carolyn Male's book of ''100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden." Hope you follow this advice as it will save you a lot of grief.

I also had the same thing happen to my pole beans 2 weeks ago. I sprayed them with a product called malathion and it took care of the problem. It sounds like you also have a flea bug problem. Lots of luck!

Thanks Tplant and fishrepair for your advice.

fishrepair, did you replant? Did any of the plants survive? I went out tonight and replanted the really eaten ones. Some just have a few holes. DM

No I did'nt replant. The plant put out new leaves in a short while and began to grow again.

Thanks so much! I didn't want to have to replant the bush beans too. They just have a few little holes in them.

The holes in the leaves should be a big problem. I had the same issue becaue of snails mainly, but my beans are still producing on a daily basis, a little too much.
